Post by Beowulf »

Olga's like one of the oldest sites on the net. In fact, I think it predates the web - I remember ftp'ing tab from their pub directory back in the day (after I walked five miles through the snow fighting off polar bears)

not to be a snotty little ★■◆●. but you will do yourself a favor by either using written music or your ear. tab limits you in the long run... imho.

True, but if it's the spark that gets him going it's not all bad...
Beo, stay curious about the big picture, don't just be a TAB robot.

Oh I can read music...I played piano for four years and violin for five. I usually get written music but I was just looking for a few tab songs to jam to.

Most mainstream songs I don't bother getting tabs for, because I can figure them out faster than I can surf for them. But for trickier stuff I usually just type in the artist, song title, and tab, i.e.
racer x "scarified" tab
and that usually works. Sometimes I have to look through several to find one that looks correct.

But if you're not familiar enough with guitar or tabs in general, I guess it could be harder. I know of tons of sites, but not really what their overall quality is.

Try:

www.tabcrawler.com
www.mxtabs.com
www.ultimate-guitar.com

I'll edit the list pretty soon, as I have some songs to search for, and that will refresh my memory of other sites.

Slight edit. Tabs are great for reference. Beyond that, you limit yourself to what you can do musically when you only practice tabs. I love people that practice tab, then finally figure out a song, and say "it only took me two weeks to learn hotel california and play it"...lot different playing in a band :)

That's what I was thinking at first, but only because I thought Beowulf was looking for drugs.

I sometimes resort to tabs to learn parts of solos or whatever that I can't quite figure out. Or I use them just to save time and effort I don't think it limits me too much since I'm not that creative anyway. Pretty much all the bands I've been in have done covers, so I"ve spent a lot of time charting out songs.

i really wasn't trying to be a caulk. it all really depends on what young beo wants to do with music. if he is a hobbyist then tabs will fly... but a well honed ear is a must in my world.
