You honestly think there's an actual person reading every email to go through the GMail server? They're scanned for keywords such as CAR or MUSIC and the advertising autonomously reflects what the server determines as your general interests.

That's what they do. Personally I find google's context-sensitive ads to not be terribly intrusive, and actually relevant enough most of the time for me to warrent clicking on them. Granted I don't really need a gmail account, but I decided to get one anyway. Might come in handy one day.
