You do know that Africans enslaved their fellow Africans and sold them to whites? And do you know there were more Irish sold as slaves than Africans?

As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.

while the first part is true, as a result of tribal wars in Africa the latter is patently false, and been spread by white people for years. Simply not enough Irishmen to have that claim remotely be accurate, and the timeframe involved argues against it. There is essentially NO RECORD of significant presence of Irish slaves in the US colonies in any numbers. Not so Africans, who were better suited to the climates where slave labor was utilized.

no, I'm not. What normal thinking modern human would be?
Now, mind you, I have little ability to go back to the years pre-1803 and alter the reality of tobacco planters in the Virginia colony/state, but I can't. All I can do is fight racism in the here and now. I even feel the US should have honored the reparation plan of 1868, but that never came to be. We owe African Americans a debt that really can never be repaid properly.

I'm well aware of the history of slavery. It's been practiced ever since humans figured out that they could conquer their enemies and turn them into slaves. There are many references to it in the Bible. And yes, slavery is still going on today as a dirty little secret in many countries.

What I'm talking about is the European idea of using those particular peoples from sub-Sahara Africa and then later on all of Africa, to run their economic engines for business and profit. The Portuguese slave trade starting in the 15th century was the first recorded instance where people were taken forcibly from Africa purely as slaves. By the 18th century, the British were now engaged fully in the slave trade as well, especially to fuel their colonization and trade in the New World. I guess what worked for the Portuguese worked for the British. The Triangular Trade, as it was called back then, was really profitable for the slave ship owners. So much so that these ship owners could afford to have quite a few of their African slaves die while en-route. All those nice, greedy, self important white Europeans were making loads of money directly off of the backs and lives of African slaves. How civilized of us. This went on for several centuries by the way Spidey. I'd say that's a record for keeping the institution of slavery going as a European and American profitable business interest in recent history. By that I mean post Middle Ages.

You know who started objecting to slavery? Religious people with a conscience. It was the Quakers in the 1600's that started the first abolitionist movements in Britain. Frankly, as a civilized nation, it took way too long to finally end the practice of slavery here and as most Americans know too well, it wasn't until the 1860's after President Lincoln was elected and while suffering through the first 2 years of a bloody, divisive Civil War that his opinion finally became steadfast against slavery and it should be outlawed. I can see why there is still a long lasting and deep resentment of all white Europeans by anyone who's of African descent. Their history with us white Europeans and Americans is long, bitter and deep.
