It seems the Dems had some forewarning of what was to come this year, from clear back in 1999, and they ignored it because they became too comfortable and insular sitting in their Washington hallowed halls of power, ignoring their formerly reliable base that they used to stand up for, the working class American laborer. Now people have elected their strongman, an authoritarian, that may or may not begin the eventual demise of Democracy. Only time will tell, but by then, it may be too late.
A prescient passage foretelling of the Dems future political demise, from the book by lefty author Richard Rorty, in his book: Achieving Our Country: Leftist Thought in Twentieth-Century America, (c)1999.

Re: Foretold
I posted a couple of times here TC that my anecdotal conversations with union construction worker all said they were voting for Trump. These workers historically always voted Democrat. This was one of the main reasons I said Trump was going to win and I was correct. The Dems have to fire all their prognosticators as they based their predictions on assumptions from prior elections cycles and didn't see what was right in front of their faces. They should of had the G2 to see the strength of Trump when the Dems darling, Jeb Bush, fell out of the primaries. They should of really gotten concerned when Trump beat out a wide and talented republican field to win the primary. Instead the Dems were fixated on Hillary being a shoo in and played games with stacking polls in her favor instead of of looking at reality (on RCP the only poll I noticed that had a clue was the LA Times poll)
I rung the clarion bell and reminded people here the same thing happened during the Carter/Reagan run. People like slick fell into the trap thinking the Dems had a monolithic grasp on the process and had a machine that would eat Trump alive. Hubris is a ★■◆● when you continually convince yourself that you have strengths that just are not there. The real lie was the Dems and their mainstream news organs trying to convince people the Rep. were in disarray and falling apart. The real disarray was in the Democratic Party. When you have a DNC chair actively promoting one candidate and blocking the others, doesn't give the party the best candidate to present to their base. HRC was a deeply flawed person and was the wrong option. Results? The Dems have lost more state seats and congressional seats than they have in a long long time.
To sum this up, the clues were all there and I pointed some of them out but the liberal minded here poohed poohed
me. Not being able to read the mood of the country is what cost the Dems power. On the day of the election I was at Lowes. I asked the middle aged whit woman who was ringing up my merchandise, who she voted for. She should of been a prime Democrat voting for HRC, instead she told me she voted for Trump. Had to ask her twice as I couldn't believe what I was hearing. At that point I knew for sure Hillary lost.

Oh, I agree with your observations just fine woody. I even made similar comments that Hillary was poison for the Dems and even a liberal like me got chastened for my dislike of Hillary by many of the other liberals on this board. But voting in Trump may end up the biggest mistake the voters of this country ever made. I think he's dangerously unsuited to be president. He's a vain thin-skinned egomaniac. He's always done things to benefit himself all during his lifetime. He can't even bring himself to separate his presidency from his business dealings by divesting of those dealings. Having his kids run his business is not a blind trust or divestiture. He's violating decorum and the Constitution doing it. He may just end up creating policy that benefits himself and his business dealings, not all of the rest of us. His vice president is a single-minded theocratic Evangelical nutcase who will trample the rights of everyone who's not an Evangelical. Yes, Trump will certainly change things, but will it be for the good of all people in this country, not just certain religious groups and business groups? Time will tell. Too bad all the hard working class stiffs out there didn't have had a more intelligent, principled and level-headed choice to vote for instead of Trump.
