UT2K4 worth the money?
UT2K4 worth the money?
I'm thinking of picking up UT2K4, but I'm wondering how it plays online. I really enjoyed the demo, but the community sorta turned me off. Does anyone have this? Do you enjoy playing? The assault and onslaught modes were very cool, but if its going to be like playing a game with bots then I'm not going to be very intersted.
Alien Swarm is a really cool overhead tactical coop shooter. Air Buccaneers is a hot-air-balloon mod which is a slower-paced tactical team game. Red Orchastra is another WW2 mod. Deathball is an interesting rugby-esque sports mod. Jailbreak is a remake of a popular Q2 mod.

UT hasn't been sweet since the original imo. i played it and didnt like it very much. but then again, i thought d1 was sweet because it played nice, and d3 was crap because it was in comparison a piece of doo to play. you see the pattern? they just don't make games like they used to any more.
ut2k4 is for the people who get wowed by pretty graphics. it does look badass though, i'll give it that. if you like pretty things and lots of options, you'll love it. i'd wait on one of big titles coming out soon though, unless you don't have any monetary concerns. supposedly hl2 is actually coming out and pretty soon. as well as doom3. once those come out you'll see every game out now take a major activity hit.

I agree. Nothing beats old-school UT for zany blow-em-all-to-hell madness. That said, I liked UT2k4 better than 2k3. The graphics are largely the same but they brought back some more of the characters, weapons, and gametypes from UT, and added new features like built-in voice chat and a more involved single player campaign.kurupt wrote:UT hasn't been sweet since the original imo. i played it and didnt like it very much. but then again, i thought d1 was sweet because it played nice, and d3 was crap because it was in comparison a piece of doo to play. you see the pattern? they just don't make games like they used to any more.
You're not alone. Same for me. D3 might be a bit faster, but overall feels a lot like D1 with after burners. D2 is a good deal more slugish. (still a great sequel tho! )Testiculese wrote:Wierd that I find that D1 and D3 play the same for me. The only difference is banking. (D1 'pauses' every 90 degrees on the R axis on a mouse)
Unreal, in general, probably has the most comprehensive modding and level building tools of any first-person game I've tried.
That said, I still think the original Unreal Tournament beats out 2004 ever so slightly. The original UT was fast-paced and the load times are next to nothing on a modern computer. UT2004 will blow your mind with awesome visuals and effects, but the core gameplay is not terribly different for things like Deathmatch and other typical modes. Where things get interesting and different, which I'm sure you already noticed, is in Onslaught mode. UT2004 is, however, far better than UT2003 and strongly mirrors the "feel" of the original.
There is a very large community. I've never had problems with it. Internet performance is also very good, so long as you have local servers. The game tends to get jittery with pings greater than 150 ms.
Make sure you check out the stunning Community Bonus Pack Volumes 1 & 2 if you do get UT2004:

I swear, we need to do something like that for Descent 3...

That's also what I like about it. There are lots of games of 8 or more players in them. Within that population, there's always a range of skillsets from complete newbie to honed master. Everyone can have fun.woodchip wrote:I like it as it is a game you can jump into and have at it right off the bat. Lots of variety.
While I'm at it, check out NaliCity to see the fruits of a really prolific development community. http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com
