Funny thing is I have never used Defender or even Security Essentials.

I used to - for several years in fact. Never had an issue with or without one. I've found that they create more problems than they fix, usually..
And more often than not, the real problems come from plugins and apps that get installed by people unknowingly (click here to install this browser addon type ★■◆●) which a lot of AV programs don't catch. These days I only install anti-virus on computers that are going to be used by other people such as family etc.
