If Descent 4 were real, how do you picture it? (Both gameplay- and story-wise)

Well, from my point of view it is real, if rather buggy. I still have the rough alpha version of the game Orbital produced in 2002, but am not permitted to share.

However, It wouldn't sell in today's market. Any published Descent IV would need a significantly different design than what we worked from in 02, or what 1-3 were built on. People expect a great array of feature sets from other genres now, like RPG and RTS games. Single player doesn't matter much, though if you do develop a SP campaign, it's expected to not be level-based or linear. It'd be a huge challenge to make a Descent game today that can achieve any reasonable success.

It is perfectly fine for modern games to have a linear single player with a relatively limited feature set, take Doom 2016 for example. It is one of the best games this decade and it doesn't have an open world, non-linear plot, or much in the way of RPG or RTS elements.
