I have my popcorn ready as I am enjoying watching the Dems implode. If you wonder why Trump will be re-elected in 2020, here's a prime reason.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is blasting his fellow state Democratic lawmakers over Amazon pulling out of its plans to set up a second headquarters in New York City in exchange for $3 billion in tax incentives.
In a statement Thursday, shortly after Amazon announced it was backing out, Cuomo touted the benefits their presence would have brought to the city and state.
"However, a small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community -- which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City -- the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state,” Cuomo said. “The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.”

Well NY got a first hand look at how the liberal far left, now appearing as the face of the Dem. Party, will make America Great. With truly ignorant Cortez leading the way, they complained enough about Amazon and corporate greed that Amazon finally said screw it pulled out of the deal to set up business in NY city. Vaporized are the 150k ayear jobs and the 10 billion in tax revenues over 10 years that Amazon would of paid. So tell miss Cortez, just how do you plan on paying for your socialist utopia. By taxing the rich? Are your heroes Chavez and Maduro? At any rate It looks like other Dems are starting to wake up to the idiocy of the new face of liberalism. Gov Cuomo stated:

Re: Vaporized
Yes giving one of the wealthiest corporations on Earth massive tax breaks while simultaneously gentrifying the ★■◆● out of a neighborhood and demolishing traffic is totally great for local residents.
(No, seriously. Amazon wasn't required to pay ANY federal income tax over the past two years. End-stage capitalism is completely fucked.)

Re: Vaporized
Massive tax breaks that got paid + over 10 years. Yeah, too bad 25k jobs at 150k salary might improve a neighborhood big time. Payroll taxes might go a long way toward paying for the free health care DeBlasio initiated. Now there is nothing extra. Try defending this all you want but I suspect you are going to hear less and less how the the far left is the savior of America.

Now can we also kill the absolutely atrocious 4.5 billion dollar deal that Wisconsin republicans cut with Foxconn?

FYI, Ocasio-Cortez isn't a state senator.
Also, I don't give a ★■◆● about Amazon. That website could disappear tomorrow and it wouldn't affect me whatsoever. In fact, their disappearance would help thousands of businesses.
Re: Vaporized
Deals like this shouldn't be happening at all. I don't mind public financing of infrastructure that benefits corporations, because that conceivably benefits everyone else as well. But direct tax breaks? That's just a bribe to shareholders, and a signal of greater systematic corruption. We shouldn't allow our municipalities to be played off one another like this. Where would Amazon go if nobody offered them any direct tax breaks (which they don't need) like this?
As far as Democrats In Disarray, woodchip does highlight a real thing happening. The left wing of the Democratic party has started to grow bolder, and in my opinion, represents a much saner rejection of the failing center than has happened to the Republican party this past decade.

Re: Vaporized
Really…tell that to the thousands of companies that rely on Amazon to market and deliver their products to a global market.
Yea, the loss of Amazon would probably help some local retailers…but beyond that, is very debatable.
Facts...lol

Re: Vaporized
Those companies can just use someone else. It's not like Amazon is the only platform. It's just the biggest. And Amazon doesn't just hurt small retailers, it also hurts huge department store chains.
People seem to forget that the Internet works at the speed of light. If Amazon disappeared tomorrow, people wouldn't remember it a year later. The same happens with social media. Friendster? MySpace? Replaced in an instant. Amazon's disappearance would instantly boost local economies everywhere around the US. The infrastructure is already there, it just needs to be decentralized. People's dependence on Amazon is almost 100% psychological.

I wonder if there is something more to this story. Something doesn't pass the smell test.

Re: Vaporized
Depending on Amazon to help you do business is inherently a bad idea. All it takes is one decision from someone high up and your entire infrastructure disappears. And so does your customer base.

Re: Vaporized
Yep. You piss off someone rich, they can put their money elsewhere. I think that somehow that National Enquirer blackmail bit and what New York prosecutors may or may not have done about it may have influenced Bezos' decision to back out of New York. Just guessing here.

Re: Vaporized
Why shouldn't municipalities be competitive? Each of those entities realized that Amazons benefits far outweighed the costs of the tax breaks (remember, tax breaks doesn't mean outright giving them cash money). Of course if you are a died in the wool socialist then the idea of being competitive is abhorrent to you.Vander wrote: ↑Sat Feb 16, 2019 3:13 pm Deals like this shouldn't be happening at all. Saner like wanting all airline transport to end and be replaced by high speed rail? (take a look at what CA thinks of HS rail) Or replace all internal combustion engines with electric? Or upgrade ALL buildings to a mandated level of energy efficiency? All in a 10 year time period. If you think this is sanity I suggest you run, don't walk, to the nearest mental health facility and check your self in. Do so before the socialists take it over and give give you what they think is proper care. Better yet go live in Venezuela and view Cortez's vision up close and personal.Vander wrote: ↑Sat Feb 16, 2019 3:13 pmAs far as Democrats In Disarray, woodchip does highlight a real thing happening. So you would prefer a foreign entity like Alibaba to take over? Amazon is top dog because they had a business model that is consumer friendly and very easy to use. Removing it by govt. fiat only encourages business's that are lazy and can't compete on a level playing field.vision wrote: ↑Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:41 pm

Re: Vaporized
My point has nothing to do with socialism, and little to do with competition. It's more about power and fairness. Why should Amazon get a tax break that others at a location don't? Because they're large and powerful? Quite simply, they want the perks of places with higher tax rates, but don't want to pay them. Otherwise they'd move to Wyoming.woodchip wrote:Why shouldn't municipalities be competitive? We should've been well on our way to doing those things 15 years ago while you were mocking Al Gore for An Inconvenient Truth, things we should've started doing 15 years before when scientists concluded we had a real problem on our hands that was known about another 15 years before that!woodchip wrote:Saner like wanting all airline transport to end and be replaced by high speed rail? So yes, saner. While I'm sure crying about Venezuela is probably a better solution for eliminating carbon emissions than 'drill baby drill' or 'rolling coal,' I have to say the GND much better.

Re: Vaporized
If Amazon disappeared that wouldn't leave a power vacuum to be filled by foreigners. On the retail front, Ebay would take up most of the slack, followed by Walmart and Target. What's left would boost smaller business ... until someone else gets too big again. Also, where is this magical land where corporations compete on a level playing field? The US government farking LOVES corporate socialism. (Where can I get me some of those sweets subsidies?)woodchip wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:00 amSo you would prefer a foreign entity like Alibaba to take over?
