A matter of perspective
I saw this confrontation on the news. Most of the mainstream outlets reported this incident as a bunch of white students harassing a Native American Veteran. I'll have to admit, the way it was reported upset me when I first saw it. However, the truth appears to be far from simple because most of the news outlets didn't show the entire confrontation. The setup was that the white Catholic students were there in Washington D.C. for a Right to Life march, while the Native Vet was there as part of an Indigenous People's march. In the day and age of Trump and MAGA, it was a volatile mix bound to create trouble and generate controversy. In fact, most of these protests in this country today are meant to be in your face confrontations for the sole purpose of riling up others, starting violence and getting it plastered all over the news. That's it. No matter which side any American sits on, the takeaway is that us Americans would rather piss on each other over some idiotic line in the sand, especially race, rather than acknowledge or discuss each other's perspectives like civilized people and come up with solutions. If you go to the youtube pages of these videos, the comments are outright nasty, on both political sides. The ABC video garnered a lot of lefty hate. The CNN video I didn't post here garnered nothing but righty hate and chants of fake news. This country is eating itself alive. It'll never be great again the way things are headed.
Here's a sample of what the mainstream news outlets broadcast.
However, from the MAGA side, this guy's video does have other views of the confrontation that gives us a little more perspective. But since he's sitting there in front of American and Black Line Flags while looking loud and proud wearing his MAGA hat like a badge of honor calls even his motives into question. If he'd wanted to question the validity of the story, that would've been great. However, he should have set his patriotic affiliations with MAGA aside and been neutral in appearance while discussing his findings. But nope, he wanted to be in your face, show his tribal colors and play the victim card instead.

Either way I'd wager money that the kid's parents were siblings.

“Indigenous people been on this land for millions of fuckin years”.
Yea. uh huh, placed here by the ancient aliens, I’m sure.
As far as the topic, well some of us already knew about the behavior of the press, so hard to say anything original here.

Re: A matter of perspective
That statement is probably more true than false.
I'm not sure how relevant "the press" is nowadays and it's getting increasingly hard to define what the press is. The market for network news is a fraction of what it was in the 20th Century and shrinking fast. Journalists are becoming more or less free agents with their own social media following, which is sometimes larger than a given news outlet. I find myself not blaming the press for anything these days because I can't even point to where the press is anymore. Everyone has their own news feed, whether self curated (like mine) or through social media, and those feeds are bombarded with stories posted from countless and varied sources.
"The Press" can't keep up with the speed of the Internet. I think bad press is a byproduct of the Internet, and the effect of bad journalism is part of a feedback loop rather than something that happens from the top down, like in the 20th Century when news sources were few and media was unidirectional.
Re: A matter of perspective
Is there some sort of controversy here? Looks like a bunch of privileged ass-hat teens powered up on MAGA sauce and group courage behaving pretty much exactly like you'd expect. Is there some other video of these douche bags engaged in persuasive pro-life debate?

Re: A matter of perspective
Actually, the TV press does seem to be keeping up with this one. There have been stories put out several days in a row showing what transpired before the confrontation shown in that first video. There was a lot more that went on, some of it pretty nasty, and by a group called the Black Hebrew Israelites. I've never even heard of them but they sound like they were there to agitate. The one kid who was facing the vet claims he was doing it to defuse the situation. But the stone faced smirk on his face didn't help. The kid has also gotten death threats. Not cool.

Oh please. Did his crisis public relations firm come up with that one?Tunnelcat wrote:The one kid who was facing the vet claims he was doing it to defuse the situation.
Re: A matter of perspective
Yeah, those kids were all shitheads. It doesn't matter there were other shitheads there. It just reinforces my belief that MAGA people are immature and ignorant at any age (including my close friends who voted for Trump).

Re: A matter of perspective
Look, I believe people stupid enough to wear MAGA hats like some sick badge of honor in support their egomaniacal racist dictator crook of a leader deserve any ridicule they bring upon themselves. But here's a longer version of events that show the Black Israelites before and during the confrontation in question. It doesn't really absolve the college kids because they were stupid enough to wear their "screw you" MAGA hats, but it does show what went on before that Native Elder approached the group banging his drum.

You're right, it doesn't, so don't get sucked into this "both sides are at fault" ★■◆●. It's one thing to be a disadvantaged of oppressed minority and protest the state of affairs, but it's a whole other thing to be a smug prick from the majority. ★■◆● those kids.

Re: A matter of perspective
But, but vision, a bunch of rich white Catholic kids attending an expensive religious school and marching in a "The Right to Life" rally in Washington D.C., for which someone had to pay for travel and boarding expenses, are in the minority.

Yea man, who gave those white kids the right to speak their minds?

Re: A matter of perspective
That, and mocking a Native American Veteran. That's bad too. Also, the harassing of other people at the protest site, I'm sure you've seen those videos too in your pursuit of truth.
Re: A matter of perspective
I did see the part where the white ass crackers were threatened with violence, and some of the scenes where they were being chastised for being Catholic.
As far as mocking the vet, he’s lucky that’s all he got, come and shove a drum in my face and chant some ★■◆● and see what happens.

Hey everyone, we got a badass in here! Spidey is willing to beat up an old man! Seriously, Jesus smiles on you for sticking up for those poor white kids who had their feelings hurt, somehow.

Re: A matter of perspective
I agree that they had the right to speak their minds. They also had the right to piss off everyone who hates Trump by wearing their MAGA hats like badges of honor. You know, like the KKK wearing their white hoods parading in front of a bunch of black Americans? With that in mind, they invited the derision that was heaped upon them because they obviously intended to do so in the first place. Either that, or they're idiots. If they had truly wanted to rally for life, they should've parked their hats at home. They wouldn't have garnered anywhere near the negative attention they got.
As for the wrong party, Republicans should be ashamed that they're protecting a divisive jerk who relishes in bullying and foul name calling and is in all probability a traitor to our nation. If Hillary had been doing even a whiff of what Trump and crew have already done, she'd have been pilloried and impeached long ago if she'd been elected president instead of Trump.

Re: A matter of perspective
If these kids are perhaps wondering why simply wearing MAGA hats made them targets, here's why:

Re: A matter of perspective
This story sounds suspicious to me. I haven't lived in Chicago for nearly a decade, but it's not MAGA country and there are plenty of black queers there. If this attack really was perpetrated by Trump supporters that would be exceptional. There is a surprising lack of evidence so far.Tunnelcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 30, 2019 1:46 am If these kids are perhaps wondering why simply wearing MAGA hats made them targets, here's why:

Smollet's manager was on the phone with him and verifies he heard the MAGA remark and the homophobic slurs. It's going to be hard to identify the 2 men seen in surveillance photos. If it's a hoax, a pox on all involved.

Re: A matter of perspective
Still not convinced this guy was attacked by actual Trump supporters. The attack took place near on E. Illinois St? That makes it even even less likely. It's right by Navy Pier, all super expensive condos. No MAGA-heads over there. Now, I'm not saying this guy made up the MAGA stuff, but it seems more likely that the attackers said that to either be bigger assholes or to throw detectives off the trail (probably a pair of serial troublemakers).
Re: A matter of perspective
And you were ok with supporting the egomanical racist divider Obama?
Stop spreading fake news TC, the kids were high school students some as young as 15. As such they displayed more restraint than I expect you would of done under similar conditions. When you start targeting children to promote your agenda then I submit you have lost the moral high ground.

Normally Vander I thought of you as someone well reasoned but since Trump got elected I see your emotional hate side has taken over. The kid was just that....a kid. You lose focus of this?

So show me how he was a unifier. Did he defend white people or have you forgotten the necessity of a beer summit or worse how if he had a son he'd want to look just like a murderous thug.

Re: A matter of perspective
His family did hire a crisis PR firm to handle the situation.
I've actually spent a lot of time considering that how I feel now is probably a lot like how you felt during Obama, and I concluded that my worries are more rational and justified now than yours were then.
Re: A matter of perspective
This is literally what conservative media did with David Hogg and other students from Stoneman Douglas High School. Will concede that conservatives lost the moral high-ground there too?
Can you point to something specific about Trayvon Martin's appearance that says "murderous thug?" I want to understand what your reasoning is. I mean, that sounds pretty racist the way you're talking about a average looking black kid. Maybe you don't intend to sound racist, but you do.
Agree 100%. Trump and Obama's terms are incomparable.
Re: A matter of perspective
Woody only sees Obama as a "racist divider" because he forced old white people like him to actually think about the massive racial issues that still plague this country instead of continuing to bury their heads in the fictional "post-racial America" sand.

Re: A matter of perspective
So, I wonder who gave them the idea to wear MAGA hats at their little rally if they're such young innocent kids out to protest for the The Right to Life? It shouldn't be a problem to wear those you ask? Tell me that the next time you see a bunch of antifa protestors wearing their black masks and tell me your reaction to that visual display then.woodchip wrote: ↑Sat Feb 16, 2019 7:40 amAnd you were ok with supporting the egomanical racist divider Obama?

Re: A matter of perspective
I have no sympathy for this little noob twerp. He chose to go out and politically protest in the nation's public square and if he happened to get videoed while doing that, AND IT GOES VIRAL, he's now a public figure and thus has to deal with the consequences that go along with that. I'd think he'd have a better case against the people taking the videos, but not by much. You'll also notice that he's only suing The WAPO. The WAPO was reporting the same thing as every other news outlet, even if some of it was incorrect or inflammatory. Besides, The WAPO wasn't responsible for the videos going viral. He must have had some coaching from his MAGA hero, Trump, who has a specific vendetta against WAPO and who is probably using this kid as a political pawn. He really should've just melted into the background and let this sleeping dog lie. Now he's in the spotlight again and during the discovery phase of this lawsuit, all his personal social media stuff is going to be made public. Tsk, tsk.
