Spidey nailed it. I could just show you all the posts from my local Nextdoor listings of frustrated neighbors and business owners to point out our crime problem, but it might be too much reading for one sitting. Next time I go to Home Depot or Lowes, I'll just take pictures of all the cages blocking access to all the theft worthy merchandise or the trashy homeless camps right next to the parking lot in our very small west coast city.

Stats please, you haven't rebutted my claim, only linked to a three year old article that actually supports my claim that barely anyone defunded the police. Try again.
And you only read down what? 2 line and obviously didn't read this:

Tunnelcat wrote: Sun Dec 25, 2022 1:30 pm Crime rates depend on the area they are reported from and ours are a horrible outlier to the U.S. crimes rates. To give you an idea about how much people here are fed up, our usually solid blue state is starting to shows shades of purple in the cities. Oregon almost elected a Republican governor. If it hadn't been for the abortion issue, she might have won. Compassion is waning and only goes so far to solve the problem. Business is hurting because people don't want to go into areas filled with mentally ill people who scare away or assault customers. Residents want to pick up and leave if some homeless camp suddenly plops itself down in the vacant lot next to their homes, because theft skyrockets. If their homes don't sell, they soon become invaded by squatters who trash them or even burn them down. Downtown and the east side of Portland looks like a gang war zone. A lot of businesses are still shuttered since the protests. The problem has gotten so bad that even died in the wool Dem voters are looking away from the homeless coddling Democratic leadership in search of answers. All it would take are some sane Republicans with sane ideas to knock the Dems off their leadership pedestals. In fact, New York City is proposing that mentally ill homeless people be involuntarily institutionalized. I'm even hearing whispers of that here.
It is almost like you honestly believe these people WANT to be homeless.

So go ahead and vote for a republican then and see what their "solution" is. Here is what they will do: Try to cut the social safety nets so deeply that these people will just die. Never mind that the problem likely exists because the social safety nets are already the most threadbare ragged scraps imaginable. Basically Republicans are searching for a way to mass murder everyone they don't like without it being as obvious as rounding them up into poison gas chambers.

So Krom, letting the illegals by the millions is going to help the homeless how. And letting drugs like Fentanyl free flow across our boarder helps the homeless how? San Francisco voted out a very liberal prosecutor because he was ineffective in combating crime. As for your mass murder comment, it is so whacked out that I won't bother answering as you are too deep in the liberal weeds.

Actually a large part of the problem with the homeless is their refusal to seek available help.

Perhaps the reason they don't seek the "available help" is because it is literally a boot on their neck.

Funny fact, there is more than enough vacant housing in the US to house every homeless person in the country.

Is that so hard to believe, when most are mentally ill and/or dependent on alcohol or drugs? Sure, those who want help usually take it when offered. For those who don't, if there was a visible and tangible movement to get these people into treatment, Involuntarily if necessary, and off the streets into housing so they can become productive members of society, it's a win and I'm all for it. Many people here and in the West can't find a cheap place to live either. Housing prices and rents have gone through the roof in my state, so that's part of the equation. But this is more complicated. There are plenty of jobs to go around right now and yet, a lot of places can't find applicants. How do you fix that? Sometimes, these people can make more money sitting around panhandling than actually taking employment too. Our leaders have done little in the mental health department because the money is just not there, partly thanks to Republicans in this state. And yes, some of these people actually prefer to live on the streets, as miserable as that is, which adds a big wrinkle to the solution. God knows our very compassionate liberal-minded workers here in this state have put forth a gargantuan effort at helping people.

No, I don't think Republicanism will fix the problem. I certainly don't want to vote for the current crop of wingnuts and Fascists. History has shown that their party rarely shows any compassion towards those who are poor, drug addicted and living in the gutter. To them, it's all their fault because they're just a bunch of lazy bastards. Unfortunately given human nature, some of that's true. The video below is red meat for Republicans and is part of the problem. It's also why people are getting fed up with the whole problem. All they see is lazy people whom the Dems have coddled and who won't get off their butts to work.

Really Wang? Do you research anything before you blithely post it. First define what a vacant home is:
The Census Bureau breaks down vacant homes into seven different categories: for rent, rented not occupied, for sale only, sold not occupied, for seasonal and recreational use, for migrant workers, and other vacant.
https://housegrail.com/how-many-vacant- ... -there-us/

So you going to put homeless folk in houses waiting to be rented or for sale. Don't think the owners would be too happy. As would the people who rented or bought a place but haven't moved in yet. How about the people who own a 2nd or 3rd home but use it for vacations or other reasons. The trouble with Libs like you is you read some factoid and don't bother to understand what it is saying.

Basically wealthy people bought up most of the open housing and drove the price of housing up so high that a whole bunch of people fell into homelessness. And you're saying that's a good thing? You can't see how someone owning a 2nd or 3rd home they rarely use might contribute to the ongoing housing crisis?

Just to prove the current Republicans are heartless jackasses, several busloads of migrants where just dropped off in D.C., right next to the V.P.'s residence. Most of those people, including kids, had not been giving given any warm clothing and it was below freezing. So they were basically treated as human garbage political pawns to make some sort of sick point. No Republican governor claimed responsibility, but it was probably Greg Abbot of Texas. The Dems have been constantly asking the Republicans to sit down and work out a way to fix our immigration problem. They haven't because all they want to to keep ALL southern migrants out, legal or not and the Dems simply won't go there. As woody has even stated, he'd rather see machine gun nests along the border. So how do you propose we fix this? The wealthy aren't the only ones that own a 2nd home. Many blue collar workers own 2nd homes. Besides the wealthy own homes that the average person couldn't afford the taxes, let alone the upkeep. And you can't see someone who worked hard and became wealthy being stigmatized as being class warfare? So how do you fix this problem? Have the state declare eminent domain and take their properties? Lots of luck.

The problem is self reliance is no longer taught. How much of the homeless problem is related to drugs free flowing across our boarders. So should the boarder states have sole responsibility for the VP's total lack of ability to handle the problem when assigned the task by the drooling idiot in charge? Should the border states not send illegals somewhere the press will report on it?
As to clothing, why don't you and some of your liberal friends start a nonprofit to get winter clothing to the illegals instead of flapping your gums about how bad the illegals are being treated. An nobody said anything about legally entering this country being looked down on. Oh and besides mg nests, throw a few land mines in the mix. Betcha the problem would be fixed real quick.

Well for one thing, we could redirect some of the tax money spent on the military (more than 1/3 of the total world military budget) and put it into social programs to help combat homelessness. As well as closing corporate tax loopholes so the richest Americans can't get away with paying way less than what they should.

But you'll probably call that communism, lol.

Yeah, and 18 Republicans voted for it since they can't resist greasing their skids with bacon fat either. In fact, Republicans brought back pork earmarks in 2018 under Trump and pork barrel spending in 2021, in secret BTW.
