D2X Woes

Post by Top Gun »

Forgive me if this has been posted before, but I'm having absolutely no luck getting D2X to work properly. I've tried both the 2.5 version and Diedel's recent update. With the 2.5 version, my joystick doesn't respond at all and the sound has a ton of static. Diedel's update quits out just before I get to the pilot select screen. I'm running XP Home with a GeForce 2 32 MB video card and 384 megs of RAM. This is all off a fresh install of D2 and Vertigo. I'm almost a complete tech illiterate, so could someone take the time to straighten me out? :P

Do you have my most recent version? All drivers up-to-date?

Yes, I downloaded it right off your website. I'm not sure if my drivers are the absolute most recent version, but they're fairly recent (within a few months). I'll try updating them.

Your drivers will not be the problem then. What OS do you use? Did you place the d2x.ini file from my D2X distribution in the descent folder? If not, try that. If that doesn't help, try enabling the "nomovies" switch.

The d2x.ini file is in my D2 folder, and I tried enabling the "-nomovies" command line. No luck.

What build are you running? I'm using the 6/6/2003 build and its running just fine. Are you using the OpenGL or SDL build?

It's too bad that the UBB forum is gone. I think I covered most of the basics for D1x and D2x on it when we still used it. Atleast it would have been a starting point to try and move on from there if there had been no success after trying all of it.

You'll have to forgive me for not wanting to re-type it all out. It was a long post and there were several of them before that BB crapped out. I've always said there should have been some sort of lengthy D1x/D2x troubleshooting guide or tutorial done on PD or enclosed as a .txt file with the packages of both apps but....*shrug* never got around to doing one myself.

mmm...thats one of them yes. That was the one where Jeff and I finally got the joystick calibration problem fixed, which I've heard has been solved in Diedel's latest D2x. Not sure...

There was another thread however where I went through a long rundown of all the things to do when setting them both up. Atleast I think it was both, might have just been D1x in which case it would be of no use to TG.

I don't mind playing the Win95 version of D2, except for the fact that my joystick's hat barely registers and can't slide diagonally. Bit of a limit on playing :P.

That's the only version I've ever used. I didn't even know there was a DOS version of D2 until recently :P. I've just wanted to get D2X running so that I can have a fighting chance at the next D2 Revival :D.

And it also dealt with the sound lag issue. Top Gun, you might want to download the two SDL files linked to in that first post and see if that fixes your problem with the shitty sound. I know for a fact that it works fine with my onboard sound (nForce2 audio) and my old SB Live! Value (which I stuck in the spare machine).

MD, those files fix the sound problem fine, but the joystick still doesn't respond. I'll try fiddling with it later.

Diedel, I finally figured out what the problem was with your build. I removed my old pilot files and started up D2. Lo and behold, I was successfully able to create a new pilot. After a lot of finessing, I was even able to get all four axes on my joystick to register. However, there are still a few problems. For one thing, a strange Pyro HUD image, like the one next to your number of lives, keeps showing up in missile trails and Gauss fire :P. Also, it refuses to recognize my D2 CD for the redbook, the same way that the Win95 version did. Also, the sound quality is very low. I'll keep working at it...

Major Edit: Well, I finally got everything working. MD, by using Diedel's build, I was able to properly detect and configure my joystick. These same pilot files work fine in the D2X 2.5 version. Since that one has clearer sound and the redbook audio, I think I'll stick with that. Thanks for everyone's help. Diedel, while your version didn't work for me, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Keep up the good work :).
