Maybe if you understood most young American's aversion to one of the longest, bloodiest and most unnecessary wars back then, a war that they were being drafted to fight in, you'd figure it out. Or, maybe not.

From Vanders link: "But Lembcke is refuted by many other sources, including Jim Lindgren, a Northwestern University law professor who cited news accounts that documented many spitting incidents. One example: A 1967 Bucks County Courier Times article reporting that two sailors were spat on outside a high school football game by a gang of about 10 young men. One of the sailors was stabbed." and " Other spitting incidents were reported by Pulitzer Prize winners Max Frankel in the New York Times (November 1969) and Carl Bernstein in the Washington Post (May 1970)."
And some of you here keep embracing leftist as somehow telling you the truth, "Lembcke is an avowed socialist and has tried to use incomplete or dishonest research to lend credence to his government-as-pro-war conspiracy theories, to use the 9-million-plus Vietnam-era veterans as anti-war pawns."

And to Ferno and TR, trying to demean me is just the latest example of leftist rhetoric against vets. While I don't care you never served, it's people like you who ran to Canada to avoid the draft and people like me who didn't.

I've never demeaned our vets. And any demeaning of you is not for being a vet or for having served. Yet, you blindly support a coward of a man who used the usual rich man's excuse to avoid the draft during that war, money and the medical reason of the day, bone spurs. How do you think that made a lot of young men back then feel? They were forced to go off to war and fight or die as the rich and connected like Mr. Cadet Bone Spurs Trump got a free pass courtesy of rich daddy. Yes, I know a lot of rich Democrats did the same thing, so money and connections got a person out of the draft. Most young men saw that hypocrisy as unfair, because if any middle or lower class family had neither, no matter their political leanings, their sons were sent off to war as bullet sponges.

The Tribune does the South Vietnamese no favors. They come right out and blame them for losing. Yet they ignore the fact that this was a proxy war between to imperialist nations, the U.S. and China. I personally have a friend who fought with the South Vietnamese in their army. They lost because the U.S. just didn't supply them with the weapons and manpower in the numbers that China did for the NVC. We'd already lost in a stalemate in Korea. Most young Americans just couldn't stomach another deadly stalemate all over again in a cause they didn't believe in, stopping the commies.

As far as I can tell, instances of abject disrespect for veterans were publicized because they were the exception rather than any rule. There were millions of Vietnam vets from all over the country. You'd see tens of thousands of these reports rather than a handful, if it were more commonplace.

Without a doubt Vietnam veterans were NOT as celebrated as WWII vets, or even Korean War vets, through no fault of their own. The war itself was more unpopular, the goals more ill-defined and less existential. But a commonly stated reason it was unpopular was because it was putting our troops in harm's way without good reason. I don't see how that widespread sentiment would translate into widespread disrespect.

But like I said, you're welcome to share any personal stories. I'd listen.

People who refused to go to Vietnam deserved the most praise in my book. They weren't willing to put their lives on the line to fight in a pointless war borne out of Red Scare paranoia.

Korea should've been our lesson. It wasn't. How long were we in Afghanistan? That withdrawal was as messy as the Vietnam one, nor did we "win" in any of these wars. And since Trump was president when he ordered the pull out, he should've taken responsibility and done it before he left office by completing the job instead of passing the buck.
