However: "Former commander retired Army Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin confirmed Friday that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, now the Democrat vice presidential candidate, knew months in advance he would deploy to Iraq — well before choosing to retire and miss the deployment. In addition, Julin said that Walz assured him that, as a then-command sergeant major of his battalion, he would lead his battalion into Iraq. However, later on, Julin said he found out that Walz went around him — to two levels above him — to get his retirement approved before he could actually deploy."
In an interview with CNN, Julin said he and other senior leaders were told in fall of 2004 about an upcoming deployment to Iraq

I guess we have a "He said, he said" don't we? The fact is, the actual "Notice to deploy" wasn't until July. Walz decided to retire in May. Maybe he heard the rumors, but so what? He had every right to retire after serving for nearly 25 years. He gave a pretty good chunk of his life to the National Guard and I'd say that was a big sacrifice for his country in itself.

Others have defended Walz. National Guard veteran Sergeant Major Joseph Eustice, who served under Walz, told NewsNation that Walz had "fulfilled his duty," had "every right to leave," and that the Minnesota governor was not aware of a deployment order as he planned for retirement.

"As far as I know, he did not know," Eustice said.

"At that time, there were all kinds of rumors about us deploying. In May, when he decided to retire...we had no 'Notice of Deployment,'" he said.

"That didn't come until July."

Eustice, who described himself to the Star Tribune in 2002 as nonpartisan and that he didn't "care much" for Walz as a politician, added that Walz had been speaking for months about becoming a congressman.

As for chickenshit Vance, he served as a "Military Correspondent". Do you know what that is hmmmm? A public affairs specialist, not a combat serviceman. He saw no combat whatsoever, nor did he risk his life in the service of his country, so go to hell woody. I think I've watched 3 different people lay out what Walz did with his retirement. He stayed in 4 years passed the 20 year mark and 2 years after full scale combat began. There is one clip where he says he carried a weapon in war which is why this has any legs - no one is sure wether that was a flub or to mislead a room full of people.

24 years is a 1/3 of a male Americans lifespan. What a bunch of dicks turning the screws on this. Politics are disgusting.

If someone is going to brag that they have valor while claiming the other guy chickened out and stole it, they'd better have the record to prove THEIR valor. But he does a disservice to everyone who's serving or has served in the military with his constant and disingenuous attacks on a man who served a large part of his life in the service of his country, far longer than Vance did. Woody, I gather you like your disability checks and health care as do most vets? And yes, I think vets deserve that compensation for serving long after they've left the service. Maybe not so much with Trump and the Heritage Foundation though. Be careful who you vote for.

This is the one statement that Vance claims is "stolen valor". Technically, the U.S. was at war after 911 and he carried a gun during his service. He just wasn't in Iraq. Why is that stolen valor? Neither man pointed or fired their weapons at an enemy in combat, so Vance is full of it.

"We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are the only place where those weapons are at."
