loved kali. played on it for something like 11 years between descents, warcrafts, quakes, etc. best $20 i've ever spent 3 times.

i voted no though, we don't need to move d3 more than we already have since pxo went down. we still have people hanging out in 2 different places. this will only get us people hanging in 3 different places.

I don't presume to know what's right for other people so I'm not voting. If there were a poll that asked me whether I planned on primarily using Kali for Descent 3, I'd vote in that.

EDIT: Wow I am weak-willed. I voted no. ;)

I had to vote no. As much as I love Kali (I use it for browsing D3 servers), I'd rather stick with the IRC channels for chat. Remember, not everyone can afford the $20 for Kali or can actually make the payment. Besides, if we want to attract young players, Kali's not the right answer. Try explaining to your parents that you need $20 to chat about some game :P. My vote goes for making irc.gamesurge.net #Descent3 the one official D3 chat channel. All of the other channels can refer to it. Of course, the Rookie channel will be the official channel for noobs. That way, people can use whatever program or website they like to get into chat and find games, the same as of this moment. It gives the community more room to spread and doesn't limit us to one venue. After all, how is limiting the community to Kali that different from the limitations that PXO presented, save the fact that the servers can be joined from different places? No, I say we stick with what's working well right now. We can't afford yet another place to split people off to.

Besides, I did not get Trillian all set up or write up a complete noob walkthrough just to have things changed :P.

P.S. For those voting for Kali because of the unlimited 15-minute trial, that's no longer in existence. Right now, the Kali trial is a one-time, 30-day stint. That's yet another reason to keep things as they are; people will go for free over something that requires money to use.

Obviously :P. But if someone offers you a free pizza, as opposed to one you'd have to pay for, wouldn't you take it? The same holds true here. There are already free alternatives to Kali for finding servers and chatting. I don't expect that people would be too thrilled about giving up these alternatives, even if the cost is just $20 for life.

I voted yes, the free over pay argument is silly. People pay big bucks to keep there game boxes up to date - whats another $20

Voted no. For those of us without jobs, and with no way to pay for Kali (my parents wouldn't hear of me spending two weeks' allowance on a thing to let me spend MORE time on the computer, and my dad's the one with the paypal account) there is absolutely no way I'm going to move to Kali. As for comp upgrades, I haven't upgraded my comp in 3 years. Don't bring that up. Kali will just split D3 up more; it won't prolong its life at all. IRC and Kquery are doing perfectly fine for me. Why fix what ain't broke? Why break it in the first place?

Edit: Besides, noobs aren't going to pay $20 so they can have the "privilidge" of playing D3. They already bought the game; who the heck is going to pay more than the game cost them already just so that they can get to chat and games?

I voted yes ... If your parents wont give you the $20 then get a paper route and pay it yourself.

No paper routes available? He|| there are a million ways to raise money and where there is a will there is a way.

I remember climbing trees and cutting down mistletoe, bagging it, and selling it at a local shopping center to raise money for model airplanes when I was in the 5th grade.

Don't cry about the $20, do something about it ... Kali rawkz joo ...

Yeeeea cool - let's split the community once more and make it even harder for newbies to play D3. Wonderful idea - this way I will have much more time in the future...

It's not that I don't have $20. Heck I have over $2,000 saved. It's that my parents will refuse to let me spend any more money on computers, and my dad controls the only methods by which I can pay for it.

WORD Vader ...
2. Purchase from Kagi ($20.00): Available for US and non-US customers.

IMPORTANT: Orders through Kagi are charged the full $20 amount. For a discounted purchase, see the link above for PayPal. However, Kagi offers more payment options than PayPal. Payment options include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Optima, Discover, Diners Club, Carte Blanche, JCB, Eurocard, Checks, Cash, and Money Orders.

NOTE: Orders through Kagi are currently being manually processed as soon as we receive the order. This means it can take anywhere from a few minutes if someone here at Kali.net is actively processing orders, to several hours if the order arrives after-hours. This process will be automated within the next couple of weeks if many people decide to use Kagi instead of PayPal (the preferred method of registering).

I voted no. I'll side with Checkor, Top Gun and Stryker. If we're going to attract new people to the game, we need to keep the community as open as possible. Telling people they're eventually going to have to spend money if they want to hang with the community is not going to help. And, as someone else pointed out, why should I spend money on something I can get for free. Excuse me, but I'm cheap.

Stryker makes a good point about parental controls. They not only control the purse strings, but even usage. While he can chat and play, Stryker's not allowed to use Teamspeak. Don't forget a lot of the noobs are youngsters, so we've got to make it as easy as possible to stay in the game.

Iceman, your remark about not seeing noobs baffles me. I've seen them and I keep seeing them. I got an application to join the team just yesterday. Granted, due to the nature of the game, some don't stick around very long. I've got a two month old list in front of me with 10 names on it. 2 are on the team, 2 went to other teams and the other 6 disappeared. Ok, some come and go. The point of the exercise is to get them to stick around. And I don't think running off to Kali is going to help us in that effort.

[edit] Ok, Capm, then let's keep it at Gamesurge. It's the designated chat room for Team [NuB].

How many people are in IRC at any given time? There are at least 20+ people on kali's Descent server at all times.

Also, once a noobie sees the potential of Kali as a central location for ANY game, they will find a way to fork over 20$.

Kali is easy to setup, and connect to a server. You can even have it connect at startup.

I'm sorry but I don't tihnk IRC is the way to go when Kali was MADE for Descent.

I needed a WHILE to find what I was looking for. IMHO it is very overwhelmed with all the other crap Non-Descent.

If you have a bookmark like these:

www.descentforum.de/chat/gate.php?chatname=I_AM_A_LOSER
you have all you need and it is the easiest to use AND it is FREE FREE FREE - so I gonna buy a few copies of D3 over at ebay - that is a better investment :)

At the moment there are 25 people in the gamesurge chat. On Kali you may see more - but there you have all the "I am idle 24hs here yeaaa" and the D1, D2 and D3 people mixed together - no wonder if there were more people chatting - but there aren't...

You was that "this_sucks" ? Very uncool Merlin. There are 25 people in the chat: www.descentforum.de/chat/gate.php?chatname=Merlin but if you aren't able to use a hyperlink then you are hopeless (you were in the chat of Descentforum.de - NOT in the gate.php) but this is the wrong topic for this. Go here if you need more info: phpbb/viewtopic.php?ht=2020 - oh and BTW: there ARE 26 users in the Gamesurge-D3-Chat at the moment and nobody is talking german in there...

the "community" has been split since D3 and the Advent of PXO. D3 simply sux in IPX mode. The host has clear advantage and thus was never played on Kali like D1 and D2 were. Too bad too. :\

I would like to point out the irony in your statement here, since everyone had to pay money origially just to buy D3 so that they could hang out with D3 people on PXO in the first place.

I would also like to point out that paying for Kali is a one time shot only. Jay set up the contract with Kali users that your serial is legal and operational for the lifetime of the user, and that means a forever guarrantee, not the legal "lifetime" limit of 7 years in most "lifetime" contracts. This is unlike online gaming fees of every other service, that requires a monthly fee.

Therefore, if you use Kali for as long as I have, September of 1997 to now, then the monthly cost for using Kali works out to just over 24 cents a month. And the longer I use it, the further my original $20 stretches out.

So while it may seem like a sizeable chunk of cash, consider this: Kali survived even when it was no longer supported by Jay or the Koreans, and even independant servers have supported our community from time to time, when we thought it would all crash, but didn't. PXO may be down and gone, and those free chat servers you guys are using may not be there for you all the time, and you may need to move to other servers, and that will split you're group further, while Kali remains stoic and indestructable.

All for a few measly 20 bucks.

Kali does TCP/IP now, unlike when d3 first came out, so ipx servers are a null issue now

ah, ok Cap thx.

Sunch, when D3 first came out, a dedicated server was still a fairly new thing. Descent was originally designed for LAn so IPX was the protocol used. (I'm sure you know that) But even if an individual set up a game via TCP/ip, the host still has a zero ping advantage.

That was the big thing behind D1 and D2 on Kali or Kahn. You just dropped into a game and played or hosted and played.

Yes

Damn straight yes to Kali. Great chatting place and gaming place, I know IRC would not work... i've been on IRC and it is not made to be a gaming chat central.. IRC's stability and reliability has greatly decreased since DoS attacks starting occuring. No such problems have ever occured on Kali.

Interesting trend i've noticed....

those who say yes are oldskoolers. these people are usually older, and don't mind the idea of pay to play

those who say no have only known D through D3 and PXO. these people are generally younger and are opposed to paying anything more than what they did for d3.

Deadmeat: there's a side benefit to having things that aren't super easy. it makes people use their heads for a change, and it instills the fact that in order to have fun you have to work. take out the work part of the equation and you get belligerent punks that demand everything handed to them.

Descent Started on KALI still thrives on KALI, whats wrong with going back to KALI! At least with KALI you can play all 3 versions of Descent (this is where you D3 veteran wannbe's get owned) Play any other Game RIGHT from KALI... when I'm In Chat(IRC) I always have KALI open too.

Kali was here before PXO (PXO seperated the Descent Community) and will be here long after the OFFICIAL notice from VIOLITION about PXO's Demise.

You guys will pay 6.95 a month for Gheyspy but refuse to drop one JACKSON for a lifetime subscription! do the math
