re-phrase

Post by Ned »

let me re-phrase

What do you think are the specifications beyond which improving the PC isn't going to help descent much??????

Ned, your specs look fine. Do you playin D3d or OpenGL mode? Also, what kinda connection do you have?

It might be that you need a Motherboard BIOS update, a driver update of some kind. (maybe VIA chip update or vid driver update.) Also, there are tweeks to the BIOS settings that can improve your system's preformance. A lot of use here have been playing for years and years and take much of it for granted. ;)

Ned,

one thing that hasn't been mentioned is your sound card. I've seen crappy onboard sound cards really mess up people's gaming experiences in anything from D3 to Quake to BF1942.

few years

Post by Ned »

Yeah, descent three is already a few years old, it shouldn't tax a system like mine much.

I have a cable modem and a good sound card I think. Actually tonight it looked pretty good. I think the problem is 90% my reaction time.

Any of you all Linux fans? Im trying to learn. I dowloaded Mozilla, and then couldnt even find it! Ugggg.

You'll have fun with Linux if you can't even find Mozilla. :P

I would love to go to Linux. Only problem for me is the compatibility of games. At least D3 works on it.

Good point Lothar. A buddy of mine had the the dame problem. There was a lotta memory sharing, and bus crowding.

Hey Ned. :)

Regarding onboard sound cards: Times are changing, they seem to be getting better, depending on the quality of the mobo. If its pre-2003, then get a better sound card.

HI!

I'll look tonight and try to figure out which card I have. I think it's a Creative from maybe 2 yrs ago (Whenever 866 was a good new CPU speed).

My joystick is USB, not sound card though.

Whats the easiest way to run command line switches?
I tried to do framerate, but I am so used to windows, I forgot how to do it!

add "-timetest secret2.dem" to your Optional D3 Command-line switches (Misc. panel of D3 launcher). Run D3 and it'll take over the game, run a test, and deposit the results in 'fps.txt' in the D3 main directory.

bet, put in one more command that Iceman forgot "-framecap 0" (without quotes), it should drastically change the results. And leave it in when you are done because you will find the game to play MUCH faster and smoother.

Once again, in the optional command lines box under the misc tab it should look like this "-framecap 0 -timetest secret2.dem". I highly reccommend -framecap 0 because Descent3 automatically defaults to a 60 FPS maximum framerate unless you override with the command line.

On the last LAN, Checkor found out that framerates are heavily soundcard depended. Maybe he can say something about that here.
The AGP aperture size is also interesting and the screen resolution, too.

Krom: wow! An average of 530.73 is seeeeeet ;-) I own an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ and get only 154.61 :-/ (Audigy ZS with EAX enabled :-] and all details enabled/maxxed out)

Disable EAX and your FPS will go up a LOT!

Or use -nosound when you run timetests like everyone else.

I got that FPS at almost identical settings to what I play, with the exception of sound and I normally run antialiasing.

Yo, Ned.

The Guided Missiles turn into homing missiles if you hit the secondary fire button again after it's fired. They track like a mofo. That's why most people don't like 'em.

In dxdiag, turn your sound acceleration to basic. That'll get you tons of frames. I've been doing it for years.
