Fan Recommendations

Post by Arch »

It seems my Vantec fan controller is on the fritz for reasons I'm unsure of. Whenever I power up the 4th knob it causes a huge dip in voltage across the other 3 knobs even when nothing is plugged into it. Also, when I stepped out of the shower this morning I heard all my fans screaming away at full blast, assuming my roommate was being a dork and turned them up I went to investigate. Much to my dismay all the knobs were turned down and adjusting them did nothing to the speeds of the fans. After a few seconds of tinkering the fan controller simply died, shut off completely. This of course is a very bad thing as my CPU fan is plugged into it.

Anyway, I'm looking for some new fans I can use in place of whats in there now, a mixture of Sunon 2.0w and 4.3watt fans. I want something with the highest level of airflow with a db level under 30. My CPU is saddled right now with a Vantec Tornado F5 (92mm, 115cfm at full power). I'll replace all of them if someone can point me to a decent fan.

Why do you need new fans? Wouldn't a new fan controller put you back together again?

That said, I'm interested in useing fans that come with their on rheostat. Thermaltake has a nice selection of them, though I've only got one of them ATM.

This listing is a bit dated, but might be of some help. http://gizzo.8m.com/fans/

After some thought I think I'm going to get a new controller. Vantec makes a SWEET one that fits in a 3.5 bay, varies the voltage 0-7-12v. Thats hot. Now I can actually turn the fans off. Check it out here:

I think I'm going to be purchasing one soon.

No time like the present dude. I didn't know how to do it either, so I ended up teaching myself how to do it.

I know how to solder but I would much rather buy something that looks really nice and works than make my own fire-hazard ghetto-rigged contraption that sorta works.

So there.

Exactly my thinking. I ordered the one I linked above. It has 3 channels instead of 4, but thats not a big deal for me. The forth channel is to control the 2 cold cathods that it comes with. My case doesn't have a window so I won't be using those.

Got the new fan controller today, things are much quieter again thankfully! The 305 is a nice little unit and it looks much better than the monsterous 201 that takes up a 5.25 bay.

I drilled a hole through one of my slot covers and mounted the blue cathods on the outside of the back of my case. It provides a slick looking blue glow under my desk. Its also sound activated, so once it gets dark here in my room I'm going to turn them on and see how they look.

Overall, nice unit for anyone who is in the market for a fan controller. Here's a picture of it installed:
