Here we have a case similar to Aladdin Nights. Or maybe akin to Howard Stern. Perhaps we are witnessing a change in Americas self perception and many don't yet realise that it is happening:

"Of the 38 papers that run the Continental-produced Sunday comics section, 21 wanted to drop "Doonesbury," 15 wanted to keep it, and two had no opinion or preference. "I wouldn't call the vote [to drop 'Doonesbury'] overwhelming, but it was a majority opinion," Wilkerson said.

"Doonesbury" -- which appears in more than 1,400 papers via Universal Press Syndicate -- has made a lot of news this year with strong criticism of President Bush and the Iraq war. In one sequence, Trudeau offered $10,000 to anyone who could prove Bush served in the Alabama National Guard. And, in an ongoing story line, the B.D. character lost a leg in Iraq and is dealing with the aftermath of that devastating injury."

Perhaps Trudeau should consider putting his work on the editorial page instead of the family comic section.

Actually there are lots of papers that have moved Doonesbury to the editorial pages for just that reason. I think there is a valid argument for putting it there.
BTW I love that strip. And I notice that no one ever claimed that $10,000.00.

I actually also think Doonesbury belongs in the editorial section. It's perhaps the only strip commonly seen in the comics section that's easily more of a satire than a sitcom.

I don't know, in the Boston Globe, they have doonesbury on the family comics page (representing the left), and also have Mallard Fillmore representing the right.

One thing that I've always found interesting is how Mallard Fillmore seems to attack liberal people rather than liberal points of view... But I digress.

I think it's split down the middle. He attacks John Kerry because he's the presidential candidate, but he just as often attacks the concept of giving terrorists Constitutional rights or affirmative action.

BTW, Newsday's the same way, except Doonesbury is the second strip (right underneath Garfield) and Mallard Fillmore is relegated to the back page.

What is the problem here? Doonesbury has been doing political satire for ages and it's always been in the comics section. Grow some thicker skin for pete's sake. What's next? Wanna move Wizard of id too? How about Shoe or B.C? They lampoon the political scene on occasion.

And B.C. is dangerously slanted in a Christian direction. Needs to be balanced with a little Hindu humour or Buhddist hijinks.

Ever since Lil Abner was censored for being too sexy, comic srtips have been going down hill.
Lets not forget Pogo as being one of the first comic strips that used political satire.

Perhaps the same reason that noone has ever claimed the $15,000 reward for providing an actual income tax law that mandates payment.

The 16th ammenment only provides for congress to have the ABILITY to create an income tax. The ammendment doesnt create the tax itself.
