Surveilance - Need Recommendations

Post by Iceman »

It seems that my daughter's lockbox with around $120 cash was stolen from her room. This is the third time in two months that someone has taken money from her room. Not sure who it is (mebbe her estranged mother, mebbe her nanny) but I need to find out.

So, any recommendations on some sort of inexpensive surveilance system that I can put in her room to catch this theif?

web cam is your cheapest bet. Put it in her room and plug it to a PC somewhere else which can record the video or pics. I'd take pics every 5 secs or so.

You can get USB cameras that only turn on when there is motion, the software will automatically email you the pictures. I think mobius wanted something like that a while ago but the thread was probably deleted in the move to phpbb.

Shotgun rigged to the doorhandle works well.

Bait them. Put money in it, check it before and after visitors arrive. Change the locks so only a select few have the key.

stolen

Post by Ned »

Iceman,

That has to make you feel upset and violated. Best of luck and don't overfreak when you see what's up. I'd move on this right away. A nanny being called by the police (w/ evidence)may be the best thing to straighten out a life headed for the toilet.

My sympathies,
N

How about a tiny wireless color camera with a 90 degree field of vision that will run for 9 hours on a 9 volt battery and a 60 FPS DVR card that has built in motion detection software, all for about 250? email me or catch me on the TS, bro.

Make sure this is on a computer with a rather large hard drive or you'll run out of space pretty quickly if you don't check it often enough.

I use a company called home sentinel. However, I cant seem to find their website, so they might be out of buisness.

I have the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000. The software it comes with has a "Motion Detector" app that you can run and it will start recording video and sound when the motion in the room exceeds whatever level you set it to. Its cheap, $75 at Newegg:

Good product!

I don't think that device can record to anywhere, Ice. What happens if you miss catching the perp in action?

Actually this is what interested me ...
You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send you an email message with a short video attached whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants

Um, just make sure said monetary locations are in a secluded location in the room. Otherwise, you might get in trouble for having a camera in your daughter's room. :o

Disclaimer: I'm obviously not implying anything, just thinking of the reaction of others. :P

Pehaps the money is beeing spent even tho she's telling you it has been stolen. Always good to keep your mind open to the other side of the coin :)

Um, given your current situation, I would strongly heed Jagger's advice... the last thing you need is to be accused of being a child molestor.

No way, notta possibility ... She is 10 years old and was almost hysterical when she saw the 2nd batch of money was gone.

Point taken, my daughter will know about the camera and it will be placed so that she retains all of the privacy she enjoys now.

BTW: The (not)soon(enuf) to be ex has already implied that I was too 'friendly' with my children. I have just paid a court sanctioned psychologist to do a full psychological exam on me and my children to combat this. She will be testifying on my behalf ... If she tries to pull that sh|t again, she will truly regret it.

trap

Post by Ned »

Could this be a trap? IE, accuse you of being "too close"," then steal money, then wait for you to put a camera, and then document that there is a camera there?

Hopefully it's just a nanny or cleaner issue, not marital discord. Sucks.

I feel sorry for your daughter to ever feel like her room had a thief in it.

Good luck.
