Good high quality, high volume laser printer for around 1000

Just as the title states. My company has been using Lexmark Optra printers for a long time but they stopped making the models we used (T610, S1625, T520 and T522).
We have tried switching to dell's version which is just a repackaged lexmark, but they suck so much its not funny.
Any suggestions from peeps in the industry?
Thanks.

how many sheets of paper you looking to push?
My school had the HP laserjet 4100(or was it 4200) set up in classrooms all over the place, and the only thing muffed about printing at the school were incompent people watching the print queues(they had a NT print queues for all the printers, even tho the printers came with HP's interal print server, and duplexers, which only a few were aware of. I choose to print directly). Printers themselves were excellent workhorses.

All the NEW models since Q4 of 2002 have been Dell printers with a "LEXMARK" badge

When did this buyout happen? According to the Lexmark.com website it didn't, as Lexmark International Inc. is still an independent, publically-traded company.
Here's the only reference to Dell in Lexmark's 2002 Press Releases.
