I can only assume that American Idiot is a pun on "American Idol". I wonder if they're aware that the idea for American Idol was imported from the UK, where it started as Pop Idol.
actually no, the new album is suppsoed to be quite politically inspired, the song is really just about (i assume) the average american blindly supporting whatever is fed to them from the TV and multi-national coporations...

When I starting my senior year in high school, Green Day was gonna do a show in Fargo. I won tickets off the radio. I had a date with the homecoming queen for the show.
Green Day cancelled the morning of the show, denying me that date. I have hated them ever since.
