Once and for all time: stopping processes from EVER launchin

Post by Mobius »

I'm using a nice little proggy called "startup.exe" to control what launches at boot time in XP Pro. It's great - but two processes are REALLY starting to piss me off: qttask.exe and TKBell.exe -- Yep - you got it - fcuk-ware at its absoluite most infuriating. Quick-Fuxoring-Time and Real(LY-FUX0Ring STUPID) Player.

I remove the tick from the startup items in "HKLM/RUN" but the indicated processes above simply add themselves to the list again! AAAARGH!

What I want is something which simply prevents named processes from starting, and/or shuts them down immediately they attempt to run. Also, something which prevented them from adding themselves back into the startup folder. (Can I make HKLM/RUN "read only"?)

Honestly, if I had a Kalishnikov - I know what I'd do with the first few magazines!

I use the administrative Services tool to stop and disable services, but since I've never used Real Player, I can't tell you how it handles that.

Um, maybe this has changed since I used them last, but the Quicktime and RealPlayer that I remember both had an option in their preferences somewhere to enable/disable those "background" processes.

If they were enabled, whenever you launched the main Quicktime or RealPlayer programs they would check to make sure those processes were running, and check the registry to make sure they were set to start on boot. So if you disabled them from something like msconfig, they would just put them right back.

Whereas if you disabled these options, they would be removed from the registry and never run.

Do they not still work this way?

in my System Mechanic 4.0, i edited the start options themselves, set it as "RunOnce" rebooted, rebooted again and they were deleted as boot items from the registry. Image

I figured these were fairly self-explanitory, but apparently...

Open up your local services in your control panel/administrative....

Image

Select the process you want to disable, right-click and and then select properties...

Image

Select DISABLE, then hit okay...

Image

Then stop the process.

Image

Whala, process is disabled permanently.

Oh wait this is Mr " I tweek and JerryRig my computer outdated parts and warez O/S...and install everything I download..The man with all the answers but no facts" Mobius Image

Nevermind!

PS CAPM : Most of todays DBB's will not understand your post unless it has instructions for the meaning of each picture, the symbolism of each picture and the reasoning for posting it in that specific sequence.. even though it's just hand holding humor.

Actually, Bubba, I think that most people here could follow that quite easily. If they can't, they probably shouldn't be operating a computer period Image

I realize it would have lacked the humor to put..

"go to "start/run" and type "services.msc" without quotes in the dialog box" Image

I always put my start bar at the top, since all the other menu bars are at the top of the windows, why would I want to move my mouse alllll the way down the the bottom of the screen?

Scottris, the settings in Preferences, in RealPlayer at least, are completely ignored by the application. You check that option to not load at startup, it gives you 2-3 days, and then adds it right back.
