I agree with kd. PD is important, even the forums. For the record, I found PD first when I was a n00bie. I found the DBB through posts and articles on PD.

Edit: and even if most people are around 14, it's still fun... (im only 13...)

Edit 2: still not up

Kd, uh GameSpy's technical support e-mail address is for members of the Network. You know, Planet site staff, hosted site admins, etc. Completely internal for GameSpy sites.

Unless you're a member of the Network too (and had your own site), there's no point for you to get involved here, no offense.

Inquisitor told me he got an auto-response (which is the standard first phase of support) from the GameSpy Techsupport address. So now they know about it (I never got the auto-response).

My money's still on one of the Gamespy IT peeps tripping over the power cable :P. Of course, not many people would notice little old PD going down, compared to the bandwidth nightmare that PlanetDoom must be right now :P.

If they tripped over the power cable, the error would be Connection Timed Out, not Connection Refused :P.

I have to agree with what Top Gun and a couple others said. PD is an important part of this community in that it's very often a n00bs first link to what goes on in this game. I know it was for me. I don't go there very much anymore, mainly because I don't have too many years left on this planet to wait while GS decides to upload a forum topic. :D I sincerely hope this is just a minor glitch on GS's part and PD will return.

On the other hand, I have to side with Tyranny. Losing PD would hurt, but it wouldn't be the end of D3. PXO went down and people paniced. But, we've survived that. Chat and games are just as full now as they once were thanks to the efforts of some resourceful people out there. And if PD goes down permanently, the needs will be filled. I have one member, Red_Barchetta, who has practically everything that PD offers on his server, which is publically available. Granted, it may be more difficult for the n00bs to find us, but I think that would work out too.

Hey, it's me, Vanguard, yep the same from PlanetDescent.
I decided to come in here and see what was up with PlanetDescent.
First off, I had decided to buy Descent I, II, and III once again, but the sad nbews, Planetdescent is down.
Wouldn't you know it, I decide to get the games again, and need patches, and some links, levels, and before I get the games, it's down.
But I did get some, so it's okay for now.
As for what most are talking about with the PD and PXO being down or dead, I half agree.
True, PXO died, and we are still playing online, talking about the game, or many other things on here, your chat programs, etc.
However, I feel that if PD did go down, that would really do damage to Descent. Why? Because new or even older people can't download stuff for the game, like in my case. I can't play Descent or Descent II until I get the patches.
I was unable to find the Descent TCP/IP site to play games online. it was by accident that I was in gamewinners to get codes that I saw the link on the top left.
Basically what I'm saying is, if people can't download programs, levels, patches, etc, because PD is dead, that may very well harm Descent badly.
For those who haven't complained much about PD or PXO being down/dead, are probably the people that ALREADY have the files, programs, on their HD.

PD's files are actually still accessible. They are stored on alternate servers because GameSpy doesn't permit downloadable files to be stored on the Web servers. FilePlanet and DFiles.de have all the files (and the PD mirror for autodownload is DF anyhow). I can dig up links for anyone who wants them as I have nearly all of the PD site files on my hard drive anyway (I don't have any of the forum avatars, but that's about it :P).

All I really need is one of those patches for Descent and Descent II. I can't remember which one it is.
BTW, anyone know where I can get the Descent I and II definitive collection?
Also, is interplay (and store) down too?
I'm afraid it is though, because I had tried to get there a week or so ago, and it was down.

One of the latest things on PD is that Interplay is now also dead!

Welcome Vanguard! I recently joined too. Good argument, even tho, it seems we can still get those files, and remember my D2 fix?;) It really does work for me and my not yet year old system!:P Hopefully PD will return, and leave the forums the same!

Thanks. I just joined today mostly to figure out what's going on with PD. As for now, I guess I'll make myself at home here. Don't worry, I'm no pest or any trouble. I just want room service every night and day. I prefer some descent patches :)
But anyway,
I faintly remember someone fixing the Descent 2 patch or whatever.
Like I said though, I can't get to any of these files.
I dont have Descent 1 or 2 yet. It seems that the person who was suppose to give me Descent 2 gave me the wrong item :x
I hope to get those back again.
Descent, and yes, even doom are pretty cool games.

Doom is just weird and gruesome. Descent is awesome.

It's funny how like half (exaggerated) the people here are(were?) also on PD.

Something that doesn't contain the word "Descent".

I just joined descent BB today, too. (Though Ive been with PD about 5 years, & tried to join dbb before but had tech difficulties).

Though I recognise core gamers here, it would be a shame to lose the PD site. It is indeed the 1st place serious noobs visit to learn more about the game.

Descent has "Classic" appeal & I believe it will be around a long time, analageous to the way "MONOPOLY" lasted in board games. As a classic, it shouldn't be dismissed to easily. Hope PD comes back... :D

Sure more people came here because PD is down.... but as soon as it's back up, most of those people will be gone again, back to the place where Descent is always the topic. :D

;)

Vanguard: You might want to try www.descent2.com and download the patches from there.

For those coming here looking for info on PD, welcome to the DBB. Watch out for Krom though. He has the habit of firing off megas at any newbie he spots. ;)

If anyone needed my levels, since my hosted site is down, I've moved it over to:
http://kyouryuu.furvect.com/levels.html

This is actually a measure I took just before PD went down in my ongoing pseudo-serious attempt to amalgamate both my sites.

We won't be so regular once PD gets back up. I still think PD should have it's own forums. Like I said, there can and maybe should be a link to these ones in the PD forum index.

BTW I'm not a n00B by any means to Descent! :P

Ohmygosh! I got PD!!!:D It's not in the best state of repair anymore, but I'm constantly checking it, and it's semi working. There's still some hope left!

What happens is it takes an exceptionally long time to load, and it says in the main table:

"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation.

/asp/common.inc, line 262 "

By the way, you can still get levels from PD when the site is down if you know the addresses. If you want the list of levels then try going to the site offline.
