game parameters? go to the prompt and use the "-help" parameter. It will give you a list of all valid parameters for your executable.
(i.e. cd\games\descent <enter> D1x -help <enter>)
Not that i think your an idiot or anything. I'm just used to spelling it out word for word to people.
Valid parameters vary depending on which d1x version your running.
Ferno's right, Kali will alleviate a lot of your problems, as it takes care of all the networking for you.
BTW, if your using the milkmod version of d1x (1.43), I have had serious problems getting net games to show up in my game list. Might be the case for you.

Uhm... firstly, it's Mikmod, not Milkmod... Just a basic typo, but anyway.
Secondly, Mikmod support was in for longer than that - I forget whether it first appeared in 1.30 or 1.40.
Thirdly, you can turn Mikmod off and just use Allegro if you want it.
And, fourthly, I doubt a sound library will affect it. The probable reason 1.43 is so dodgy is because it is Win32 code (I think).
