CHICAGO LAN SHORT WRITE-UP :)

Post by TheCops »

so... after playing descent3 for 5 years i finally went to a lan party.... and it was a mutha!

Punisher and Rook did a great job setting this thing up... all the way down to the rigs they let me use to play (sorry for being a pain in the arse :) )... and the diesel generator fumes that will permanently lower my reading comprehension skills. you guys were really cool dudes though i felt bad that you had to take care of the problems when you wanted to play D3.

kufyit was kind enough to haul my monkey slipper wearing self 7 hours each way to chicago. scott exposed me to some styles of music i haven't heard before, it was kinda cool. oh, and thanx for letting me put my beer in your car.

my first impression: i was really surprised at how quiet people are when they play... i am not... i holla "PANG!!!" and "Eat It!!!"... that's how i do it. so ya, you guys should yell more while killing.

second impression: i really suck compared to some of the monsters that were playing this weekend. krom, jazzy jet, monkey, kufyit, and the sunglasses wearing guy were just brutal... they had me spinning. it's really impressive because they don't move that much...

it was really cool to meet whitewater and zuruck... you guys are really funny. in case you haven't met him... zuruck is a smarta$$ prick.... but in a good way. ;p

i could write a novel and i won't... everyone was really nice and the vauss worked... that's about it.

OH WAIT!
i met acecombat... and for the record andrew is really a nice guy. he was real honest about his online persona which i thought was big of him. i knew all along he didn't have that second set of arms he would need to accomplish all those things he claims.
;-0

ciao! the chi-lan was a great success!

Had a blast, but now I must sleep for the next two years!

GG to Monkey in the 1v1 final (20-18) and GGs to Suncho.

BTW Suncho, you were right, the respawn in that VV game was fine at 45 or whatever, just goes to show how much ammo is really in that level if 45 respawn can still keep 16-19 ships loaded most of the time.

Pun, Rook, excellent LAN, hope you guys do it again next year. Special thanks to Clutch for the superb network.

Thanks for the blast of a game in the 2v2 final Suncho and Jazzy. Hope to see you both at the next LAN.

Thanks to IceHammer for being a good sport dispite the lousy first and only tourney matches he got (Monkey and I in the 2v2, Suncho in the 1v1).

Fezz, thanks for being my last kill in the race to 200 in the indika4, next time I will give you a 60 minute head start instead of 45. ;)

AceCombat, * me seconds what meat said. Oh yeah, next time, play more Descent, less flightsim 2k4 or whatever that was.

Everyone else, thanks for showing up!

Was my first D3 LAN as well. sucks i was only there for 1 day

Much thanx to Punisher and Rook for setting it up. AND thanx again to pun for bringing the Mac (even though it didnt work, still got to play from Shadowfox's PC).

It was awsum meeting most of the people besides rook and pun.. like Shadowfox, Jesusfreak, fezzik, icehammer, krom, monkey, stupid, jazzy jet, suncho, psion, AceCombat (hacker :P), and a few others

Congrats to Monkey and Krom for winning the 2v2 tournament, and another congrats to monkey 4 winning the 1v1 tournament :)

try a game with me and Tomcat some time. Between all the "Concussion! Concussion!" and "Hello, Fella!", you will barely hear your D3 :P

That would be Shadowfox.

I really wish I could have been there. I'd planned to go, but at the last minute a lot of things just didn't work out. I'd definitely try and go next year if this happens again.

I know that was the only LAN I have ever been to, but man that has got to be a killer! Big thanks to Punisher, Rook, and Clutch who really sacrificed big time holding this baby. I hope you can do it again!

Like Javed said, it was great meeting the D3 playaz. It's amazing how the way they talk off-line is often the exact same as on-line. "God I suck at this game" -IceHammer :)

Kufyit, great 1v1 man! You're a really great pilot, and I was a fool to underestimate your mad skiellZ.

For the most part, I was pretty quiet, besides an occasional "OWNED!" or "awww darn your MD Fezzik!!!"

And yes, I don't see why everyone's on acecombat's butt on-line, he's very k00 off-line.

I love all of you crazy D3 Lanning Mofos

Even you omegay using mine laying dildos.

:)

And for the record, it was a 60 second respawn in that VV and I spent most of the time with blue lasers and concs. Thank god it was LAN. And I got some flags even. Whoo Hoo.

That LAN has granted me a new appreciation of how lousy I am at D3. Good thing I play for love.

I don't want to call anyone out in particular, because I might miss someone who deserves recognition. I really enjoyed spending time with everyone @ the LAN, and regret that I didn't get to know some of you more.

And yes, Ace is ok in person. If only he could be as genuine online and knock off the crap. I know all he wants is love, and if he can't get that he'll just settle for attention. Sorta like me :|

OK I should do some work here. Been a long long weekend and my desk is piled high with grunt pencil pusher shizzit that I gotta do before I can take care of biznass

This LAN turned out to be everything I expected and more. Great turnout, excellent network, and a bunch of totally cool people. The room was huge and awesome and the air conditioning kicked major ass. I think I only got in about 5 or 6 hours of playing time in the entire weekend, but had a great time meeting and playing with everyone.

Shouts out to the following:

CLUTCH - Man, thanks so much for all the work you put into the network. I only wish I'd had a chance to hang out with you more than I did. Maybe some day someone will throw a LAN that neither one of us have to work at. Hehe. Thanks again, man. Good people.

ROOK - Man, we did it, didn't we? Hehe. You are the man with the plan and the best bro anyone could ever ask for. Thanks for everything. <3

BUNYIP - It was great being able to finally meet you, my brother. Thanks for coming out and spending extra time hanging out before and after. I think that was almost as much fun as the LAN itself. Also thanks for all your help at the LAN and during setup. Oh, and thanks for showing me the a$$ end of your ship oh so many times in game. I'll be thinking of you a lot in the near future as my truck still smells like your clove cigarettes. :P Gee Gee and velcro hugzz.

SCRATCH - Man, it was great seing you again, Carter. One of the coolest muthafkaz I've ever met. Thanks for being my roomie and putting up with my sleep deprived demeanor. Man, was it just fate that they gave us room 420? :P

PSION - Dude, you made me laugh so hard the whole weekend. Thanks for all your help setting up and also for your help finding the bottom of that bottle of tequila on Thursday night. <3 to you my brother. Oh, and "BRAAAAAP! Ooh hoo hoooo, boobie!" :P Ahahahaha!

SUNCHO - I'm so glad I got to meet you, bro. Thanks so much for filling in the gaps in running this LAN. You stepped up to the plate on a lot of things without anyone even having to ask, and for that I am grateful. You enhanced everyone's LAN experience with your help. And man, it was great watching you fly in person. Mad skillz.

THECOPS - So glad I got to meet you, man. It was awesome partying with you and the boys and listening to you playing in the seat next door was a blast. It's wild watcing you play. You look like you're playing a musical instrument! PANG! Hahaa! You're good people, Adam. Let's do that Pixies show eh?. <3

KUFYIT - Kuf, you're straight up one of the coolest dudes I've ever met. Within five minutes of meeting you, I felt like I'd known you all my life. And damn, if I could only learn how to fly like that. Unbelieveable pilot. Glad you could make it out to the LAN.

DRAKONA - Thanks so much for making the little origami Pyro. We gave it to Monkey as the 1v1 trophy. <3

JAZZY JET - Jazzy, thanks for coming such a long way to the LAN. You're an awesome person and a hell of a pilot. I hope to get to see you again some time.

MONKEY, KROM, SHADOWFOX and JESUSFREAK - Guys, thanks for bringing some healthy competition to the LAN, you guys are crazy good.

Honorable mention to ACECOMBAT and STUPID for helping break down the LAN. Thanks, guys. You rock!

I know I might be forgetting some stuff, but yeah, it was everyone who made this LAN what it was. Thank you all. Whaddya say? Should we do another one?

Wow that was such an amazing lan. I even got a bit emotional saying goodbye to everybody. I came into the lan thinking this might be my last lan, and a great chance to have one last great time. But nothin could stop me from going to another one of those lans. It was an amazing experience I'll keep close to my heart forever. I really hope Pun n Rook can do it again. And I hope even more people can make it next time.

Pun, Rook you guys were awesome. Rook has the coolest accent ever. Both awesome guys and an awesome lan.
Suncho ur a great 2on2 partner! We had big fun, hope to cya again.
Icehammer thanks a million for the ride in hooptie wagon. (a blue 88 station wagon with a police intercepter engine, isn't that insane) We had so much fun. Ur an amazing guy
Monkey my man. My brotha from another motha. I lova da monkee. One of the best pilots and best people I've ever met. N thanks for the hummus!
JF n SF great playin guys can't wait to cya guys next time thanks, for the cereal! Much love to Scratchypoo we've had a lot of great lans together. Kufy n Psion thanks for the techno mixin! U guys are awesome. Javed sweet meetin you hope u can play more next time. Stupid, awesome meeting you n having buffet breakfast with our awesome waiter who possibly has more one liners than icehammer! Bunyip always great to see you=) N Fezzik is really someone I don't look down on! Bahahaha Awesome seeing u again. Such a cool guy. And yes Cops is a cool guy!
Krom great playin! Cya next time. The RX guys were really cool D1 players who were instantly good at D3.

And if anyone (*cough*shadowfox*cough*) comes up to me and asks me to help them copy ANOTHER level on to their PC I am going to tell them to do it themselves! I fixed a problem that the RX guys were having with their machines (they had -nolightmaps in the command line, made levels impossibly dark). I cured testi's machine when it couldnt see any LAN games (D3 was trying to use the Microsoft TV-Video TCP/IP connection). BTW Testi, ditch 98 SE ASAP. ;)

Pun, Rook, Clutch, you guys are awesome!!! Thanks for all the hard work you guys did to make it such a great time for us. I had a blast :D

It was great to finally get to meet you guys. Since this was my first LAN everyone was new to me, except Cuda, I could of spent most of the weekend just getting to know everyone. If I have any regrets itâ??s that it was over too soon, I could have spent the whole week out there, although I doubt my wife would approve.

Bonz (pronounced bones for you that donâ??t know) I'm glad I finally got to meet you and your family that was an extra special treat. There were 4 of us from that Core Union team there, great fun :D

Jazzy youâ??re right Rook does have the best accent :-) and Jazzy wives arenâ??t as bad as I was letting on at breakfast, but I still think you would be better off in the long run if you rent them ;)

I would like to extend a special thanks to Krom for making my 1v1 career short and painless :P

Thanks to everone -- Komp

Awesome LAN you guys! Pun and Rook you guys rule!

AceCombat - I finally met you! We hung out for a few hours after Alien vs Predator and I fell asleep in your arms. *sniff* The memories!

Bonz - Awesome job in the tournament. I was seriously impressed!

Bunyip - I hate you.

Cuda - We didn't really talk much, and that's a shame. We had a lot of history from back in the Heat days. Glad you could make it out though. =)

Clutch - Thanks for the servers! The network! Thanks for bringin the prizes! Thanks for the money! Thanks for playin! Thanks for everything! You truly are dedicated. I admire you greatly.

Drakona - Your little pyro model rocked. If I had known that was the prize, I would have tried to win the tournament. ;)

Fezzik - I wish we coulda spent more time together. I guess that's what sucks about the bigger LANs... =/ It was great to see you again though!

IceHammer - You're looking great man! It was awesome to see you again.

Javed - Glad you could make it! Congrats on your first LAN. Sorry you got stuck playing on a PC. Not really though... =) However I was amazed at how well you adapted. You're an upstanding guy. Hope to see you at the next one!

JazzyJet - Sorry I let you down in the 2on2. Thanks for being a good sport about it though. I was talking about going to the SQN LAN but I've decided not to. I'll see you at the next ChicagoLAN =)

Jesus Freak - It was great to finally meet you (and your dad) We had some crazy games in there. Congrats on your first LAN!

Kompressor - You are a blast to hang out with dude. I'm still regretting not trying the horchata. Oh well. Sprite is also good. I'll call you when I have perfected the flatties.

Krom - I had to convince you that our 1on1 would be "just practice" in order to get you to even play me and then you turn around and whoop my ass. What's that all about? ;) Awesome games dude! =)

Kufyit - You rock! Every time I hold a bag of parmesan cheese, I'll think of you. Thanks for sharing my room even though it was non-smoking. Oh, and thanks for the pizza! Next time I'm in Minneapolis I'll look you up. ;)

Liquid - It was good to meet ya man. Thanks for playing in the tournaments!

Lothar - Thanks for the nametag, dude! We had some great games in there.

Meat - Sometimes I wake up in strange places too. don't feel bad. It's great to hear you had a good time! Maybe I'll see you at a future LAN! =)

Monkey - Next time you arm wrestle me, don't embarrass me by intentionally pulling back and then slamming down. What was that about? Anyway, you may have won at armwrestling... and at d3, but you have yet to defeat me at pokey. =D It was awesome lanning with you again man! You ARE the master! You forgot your trophy though. I think kufyit took it.

Psionik - I love you.

Punisher - The waiter at the hotel restaurant was reading us the specials and he was going on and on about how good the ribs are. It just made me want to punch him because it reminded me of what I could never have again. Awesome job on everything dude! I'm so glad I went and I'd be happy to do it again!

Rook - Thanks for everything! Thanks for picking me up from the airport! Thanks for hosting the LAN! Thanks for playin D3! Everything ran like clockwork. It was a beautiful thing!

Scratch - It was awesome lanning with you again! Hadn't seen you for years. You have an awesome car. Sorry about waking you up (both times)

Shadowfox - Awesome showing for your first LAN. You have what it takes, my man. You have the drive. If you weren't wearing sunglasses, I'm sure I could have seen it in your eyes!

Stupid - Dude. I actually am sunburned from walking to Wendy's. Alien versus Predator sucked. Maybe I'll see you at the next LAN, but I guess it's all just "specular".

Whitewater - I think your pheni whooped my ass in Pyroglyphic.

Zuruck - Thanks for not saying hi to me.

very cool guys, props to Clutch, Rook, and Punisher. And much thanks, they supplied me with a computer for the weekend.

Absolutly fantastic seeing some of the old faces again, as well as being introduced to the newer ones. The people in this community are what make these events great.

Descenters have gotten a hell of a lot better since my day. My game hasn't felt that bad since my first LAN.

The beatings were fun never-the-less. God I love LANS, keep them going!!! \m/,

I had a blast, nice to meet all of you guys and girl :P .

at first i had troubles with my PC freezing for a couple seconds at a time...so i had to figure out WTF was going on with it. then i couldnt access the network to get levels i didnt have from others PC's. big HOORAH to Clutch, Zach from High Octane, Cuda, and Krom for attempting to fix my network issues.

i finally found out at the tail end of the event what was causing my D3 problems, i stripped down my system and checked it thouroughly and i found:
1. APPX. 4 small dustballs located between various CPU pins
2. 1 small dustball in my AGP slot

i quickly removed and cleaned those from my PC and rebooted my PC and D3 ran perfectly fine. ohwell, i had a blast even without playing all that much.

Pun Rook Clutch.....= Teh RoXOR!!! and NP for helping clean up. :) i have several pictures that my father took and im thumbing through them right now. my father said it was a interesting thing to watch all of us just sitting there, yelling out stuff while we are playing, watching multiple monitors at a time and trying to figure out who is shooting at who he said..."that gave me a damn headache just watching how fast everything was moving in the game!" :P

of a couple of those pics, im going to attempt to make a few jokes out of them.

Krom wrote: AceCombat, * me seconds what meat said. Oh yeah, next time, play more Descent, less flightsim 2k4 or whatever that was.
lol, if my damn puter wouldnt have been acting up with D3, i wouldnt have even touched FS 2k4.
*Javed* wrote: It was awsum meeting most of the people besides rook and pun.. like Shadowfox, Jesusfreak, fezzik, icehammer, krom, monkey, stupid, jazzy jet, suncho, psion, AceCombat (hacker :P), and a few others
HAHAHA!! yah hacking with table files in Single Player mode, and not in the LAN Games. i was showing Zach from High Octane the various D3 editing tools and GAM Editor was one of the ones we started discussing about when he asked me in person what i would like to see in the new game....so i showed him  wish you could have stayed longer...everyone was asking where you went after your mysterious and sudden disapearence

WarAdvocat wrote: And yes, Ace is ok in person. If only he could be as genuine online and knock off the crap. I know all he wants is love, and if he can't get that he'll just settle for attention. Sorta like me :|
heh, why thank you, it was finally a pleasure to meet you aswell :)

haha Ace, I'd have to disagree though, that never gets boring. ;) I do personally find the sport itself more interesting than many of the others.

i think if i were to meet ace in person it would be like meeting a movie star.

i would be like "wow....THE ace combat, right here in person"...I think i would have to get an autograph just in case.

im not kidding about this either..after seeing pics of him and all the dbb goings on. It would be weird to be in the same room as him.

so..if i ever meet you ace...ill bring a pen :)
and ask you to sign my boob.
