D3 on an antique..........

Post by BAAL »

Hey guys a quick question on your thoughts. I have a new roomie who plays d3. Herein lies the problem. His comp is very outdated, i mean really outdated.

Specs:
P2-350
256mbs SDRAM
Radeon 7000 vid card
Current OS on it is XP PRO, however the os is borked and needs to be reloaded....

My question is that due to the old cpu, in order to get better performance from D3, would u suggest maybe win2k or even 98se as a better alternative for somewhat better performance. This pc is only used for email and D3.

My thinking was that an older os wouldnt eat up as much of the system ram, thus leaving more for descent.

Oh and HDD space is limited to one 8.4GB drive partitioned in half.

Oh and while i'm at it can someone link me to the best ati drivers...not really familiar with em but i heard something about omega drivers being good....

I'd try 2k...and see if you could find an old voodoo based card like a v3 to throw in there.

I'd go Win2K, though even that is pushing it on that machine. '98 is just too unstable, and 2k isn't quite the resource hog that XP is.

I'd go with 98SE if you have it.

And don't forget to shut off all the uneccesary procceses on both 2K and XP. Guide at www.blackviper.com

Also, does his mobo support any higher CPUs? If any poor bastard still has a P2 in stock he'd probably be giving it away by now.

D3 will run fine on that box. I ran it on a K6-2 350 with 64MB of PC100 with a nVidia TNT (Diamond Viper V550, 16MB SDR, AGP 1.0 set to 2x) without any major problems. I've seen Win2k run fine on a P2 200 so it should run fine on that 350. It won't be the fastest thing in the world, but atleast it'll run.

I played it on a 366 K6-2, 64MB of ram and a V3 2000. It sucked. The man needs more umph.
