Descent 3 on crack in windows 2000
Descent 3 on crack in windows 2000
I'm hoping you guys can help me with this. I'm trying to get Descent 3 playable in Windows but I am having some trouble.
1. When I type a key it will input at least 4 of that key on the screen. (for example where I enter my pilot name)
2. When in the game: as soon as i move, my ship will "teleport" randomly all over the area that I am currently in in the level.
3. And it crashes randomly.
Well I've got an athlon 800, geforce4, 512megs of sdram in this old computer. I'm thinking that possibly the ram could be damaged. Any thoughts?
Descent 3 works perfect on this same machine in linux. I only want to get the windows version working so I can play co-op with friends.
If you need any more info just let me know. Any thoughts or comments appriciated.

Any mods installed?
Post your error.log (opens in notepad). And please, don't post anything beyond the actual error message. All those register values are useless to us.
Is this a fresh install of Win2k? Have you scanned the system for adware/spyware and/or viruses? What do you have running in the background? What have you done to the machine in the last 48 hours?

Ok, this is a pretty fresh install of win2k. I applied sp4 and that's what made d3 do what i posted above, it still crashed randomly before sp4 and that's why i applied it. My computer has no spyware (or at least none that adaware can detect. Directx version: 8.0
I have d3 with 1.4 patch applied and the nocd patch applied.
Here is the latest error d3 has in error.log

I'm checking out to see if there are new video card drivers right now.

Re: Descent 3 on crack in windows 2000
Um..... There are 3 different Versions of D3 (sold seperately)xamindar wrote: Descent 3 works perfect on this same machine in linux.
Linux
Windows
Mac
Which LEGIT ones does you have(not downloaded or copied versions)
Win2K SP2 added the same Compatibility Mode found in XP. Here's how to enable it.
Avder wrote:Ace um...Win2k doesnt have compatability mode settings. It has a compatability mode program on the CD, but most true win32 apps make it crash because they can run nativly under win2k.

I used to play D3 in windows 98 all the time but sence installing 2000 it has been nothing but trouble for me.
I don't get that option when right-clicking on main.exe, only properties which doesn't have a compatability mode listed anywhere.AceCombat wrote:have you tried any of the "Compatability Modes"
goto C:\Games\Descent3\main.exe <-- right click on MAIN and goto Compatibility and try running it in each mode
(EDIT) never mind:
Now I got it.DCrazy wrote:Win2K SP2 added the same Compatibility Mode found in XP. Here's how to enable it.

OK FFace, I asked you a simple question, and you replied like a No0b. Figure it out yourself
D3 is native to NT, if you are using compatiblity mode, then you have some serious personal issues of headupthebuttocks syndrome

No, you asked a very stupid question BB. Please stay out if you aren't going to help.
Well, once I enabled compatability mode on D3 it now doesn't work at all, just gives a black screen and I have to kill it. I guess I'll have to wait until I buy a new computer.
Thank you to most of you for helping me out!

Im so sorry, I am so used to doing dual boot machines, I always ignore that bs logic!DCrazy wrote:Despite the fact that it's not even *possible* to do an upgrade install from a 9x operating system to an NT OS, you have no reason to believe he did.
win2k sucks...period for games, as a workstation it is top. 98 or XP for games... nuff said

click me Please do your research before making claims like that, mmmk? If he said 2000 Server, then you'd be right.
Xamindar: From the way you describe it, its possibly a hardware issue. I suggest you download a bootable ISO of Memtest86 (google it) and let it run overnight to test your RAM. Make sure to run ALL of the tests, not the only the standard 8.
oh yeah, thanks MD!! I was trying to remimber the name of that program and you got it for me! I will be doing that tonite.MD-2389 wrote:I suggest you download a bootable ISO of Memtest86 (google it) and let it run overnight to test your RAM. /sarcasm/ Oh.... good idea, run -ALL- the tests. Only took TWENTY FOUR HOURS! /sarcasm/
hmm, didn't find any errors. Is it possible that my ram is fine, just that my mobo doesn't like it (ie. this ram is incompatible with my mobo)? This motherboard has been very picky about ram in the past. Or would memtest86 find errors if it was "incompatable".
Nevertheless, my friend gave me his old 1.2Gh athlon and motherboard which uses ddr ram. When I get a chance I'll swap them and reinstall Windows, maybe go with XP this time. Anyone have any problems running D3 under Win XP?
