AVP, what did you think?
So what did everyone else think? I thought it was a good way to waste a couple of hours with my buddies. It wasn't as good as Alien 1 or 2 but was still a pretty cool movie. The end battle was awsome and I can see a sequal.
However, I don't get the time frame? Is this sort of like a prequel to the Alien series being that it takes place in the present rather than in the future?
Wasn't the best but wasn't the worst. Was worth seeing. if you just want to see two of the most badarss movie monsters bash the snot out of each other for 2 hours.

One of my buddies said this was just one of the "screw ups" from trying to hybrid 2 different universes into one.mob-messenger wrote:However, I don't get the time frame?
I'm gonna wait till it hits DVD and rent it. I'm sorely disappointed just from what I've heard about it.

I feel as you do, Mob. Good way to waste a couple of hours in the theater.
I personally thought the end battle was ghey. There's no way a human is going to be able to take on the queen. If I'D been involved in making the movie, the humans would've died even FASTER, and then it would have gotten to the good stuff, actual Alien Vs. Predator!

Yeah, I didn't watch the movie to see another Humans vs. Alien, I watched it to see aliens & preds duke it out. If I where the preds, I woulda smokes the humans a heck of alot faster than that. Realistically, I would have given the humans about 5 seconds of survival once the preds found them.Jagger wrote:I feel as you do, Mob. Good way to waste a couple of hours in the theater.

A terrible waste of time. It was an interesting idea, but they went the complete wrong way with it. The human/predator team-up was just plain gay. And during the slow-motion/explosion running scene I was expecting to hear "Chariots of Fire." Everyone in the entire theater laughed through most of it. And that is not an exageration.

thats not exactly "Present day" we are 20th and 21st Century. 22nd is ehh well 2100-2999 ...thats quite a jump in time

Yep, I agree it was cheesy but it can't be any worse than Ressurection. I saw that movie and thought it was pretty stupid. I saw Alien, Aliens, Alien Ressurection, (I skipped 3) and about 2-3 minutes of the end of the first Predator. I heard 2 was ghey and 1 wasn't all that great.
I didn't really expect to be scared or anything in which I wasn't of course. I don't think that there really was ever a time in the Alien series that I ever was really scared.
Anyway, I guess not being a tight fan of the Alien or Predator movies is probably why I liked it. I mean, you can't expect them to be realalistic at all.
Lets see, steel jaws, acid blood, two sets of jaws and breeds by sticking a giant bug inside your stomach through face huggers....
Kind of sounds pretty impossible? And think about ressurection, the final alien was killed by being sucked through a tiny hole that was puched in the hull of their space craft.
I didn't really go to see Space Odysee 2001, I went to see a couple of monsters so cheesy that you can see the zipper on the back duke it out for 2 hours.
The very same reason I went to see The Hulk and Spider-Man.
Now, also without the humans, the movie really would have lost it's flow. I mean, neither the aliens or the predators really talk so it's pretty hard to watch that for 2 hours. They would have also wiped out the time frame from what I could tell.
So, what are the gonna call the next one pre-alien?

Predator 1 is a perfect example of a great action/sci-fi movie. Whoever told you that it wasn't all that great is a ★■◆●ing idiot.mob-messenger wrote: I saw Alien, Aliens, Alien Ressurection, (I skipped 3) and about 2-3 minutes of the end of the first Predator. Well, he didn't say it was stupid. From what I could tell, it seemed that he just didn't like it as good as Aliens. Not sure though. He later said it was pretty good but he didn't make a big deal out of it like he did with Aliens. He did hate Predator 2 though.
Sounds like the worst movies out of the two sets are:
Predator 2
Alien Ressurection (I thought the way they brought Ripley in was stupid and the fact that everyone fought like Lara Croft was pretty lame.)
One thing I do agree about AVP is that I don't know why the humans lasted so freaking long. They just had those little lame pistols. I figured maybe they would figure out how to use Predator's weapons somehow but of course.... no. Half the time when the humans saw the predators it was like the predators were waiting for something. I couldn't figure out why they just walked past people at times instead of killing them. A couple of times it made sense but most of the time it was pretty pointless.
As for the end battle, I thought it was mostly the predator that took down the queen? Didn't the girl just throw the spear at it and then run under that big tank that it was trying to push over?
Umm, Ace, when has a century been 899 years long??"? o_O And why don't you include the year 3000???AceCombat wrote:22nd is ehh well 2100-2999 ...thats quite a jump in time
FYI, the 22nd century will be from the beginning of 2101 to the end of 2200. Ignoring the fact that there was no concept of "zero" when the C.E. began, we didn't have a year "0", so the first century had 100 years, namely 1 - 100. The year 100, began with the beginning of the 100th year, so the end of the 1st century was the end of 100 C.E.
Pedantic non-zero beginnings aside, I thought even you could add 100 to 2100 sucessfully. Back to math class for you I'm afraid.

ooops.....DUH!!
I take it you're not very familiar with the Predator mythos, because Preds are hunters, not merciless killers. They kill what's "honorable" - i.e., an armed person.mob-messenger wrote:I couldn't figure out why they just walked past people at times instead of killing them. As for the unarmed people in the movie (mostly the scientists), well that's why this movie had Aliens in it too.
I didn't like it. It could have been a lot better, IMHO they really needed a little more plot development. I felt it was kinda like...
Man: Finds temple
Man: Goes into temple
Temple: Locks down
Spooky things: Grrr
Man: Aaaaaaaa
Spooky things: stabbity stab
Man: *dies*
Spooky things 2: stab
Spooky things: *dies*
Naturally there was a lot more plot than this, but that was my impression.

As I posted in another thread, " you see AvP with low expectations and expect 90 minutes of eye candy, you'll come out winning instead of losing. If you expect minor details like "story," "plot," "character development," "continuity," "good directing," and the like, you're guaranteed to lose. Being an enormous fan of both film francises, I can only hope that AvP makes enough that some better directors take the helm of a sequel to either this one or either of the two original series'. Paul W.S. Anderson makes entertaining films, but not good ones, if that makes sense."
A couple additional clarifications:
Alien takes place in June of 2122 (based on extrapolations from dates given in the films and novelisations).
Predator 1 was an awesome movie. Predator 2 was very good as well, but had some lame stuff.
Nothing beats the original Alien. Aliens is a great sci-fi/action/horror film, and I still like it a lot, but it's much weaker in terms of how it portrays the species. H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott created a nearly industructable beast, James Cameron turned it into a duck that pops up in a shooting gallery. Alien 3 grows on you after repeat viewings, and is a decent entry in the series. Alien Resurrection is a good popcorn flick, and does add some interesting elements (ability to dodge bullets, etc.), but is definitely by far the weakest in the series. Why? The litmus test: you can take the aliens entirely out of the script and you could still make a movie out of it (the crew from the Betty trying to make it back to their ship).
I could post a ton about various details, flaws, comments, etc. of AvP, but anyone who's interested in going that deep could just as easily find any of the AvP forums. I will say that while AvP isn't very good as either an alien or predator film, I do hope it racks up some cash (so far at 77.2 million domestic gross) so maybe they can hire a more competent director for a sequel or continuation of either two films.
