Where do YOU hear breaking news first?

Post by Lobber »

Since polls only allow 4 options, I've broken it up into four huge categories:
  • Television - All television media.
Optional: Name your source in your reply (CNN, Network News, etc.)
  • Radio - All radio broadcasts.
Optional: Name your source in your reply (NPR, Affiliated Network Stations like CBS Radio, etc.)
  • Newspaper - All written media that is not electronic. Excluding Online Publication of Newspapers. Hard copies of said newspapers ok.
Optional: Name your source in your reply (USA Today, New York Times, Local Paper, School Paper, Tabloids, etc.)
  • Internet - All online media including online publication of newspaper, television, and radio broadcasts.
Optional: Name your source in your reply (DBB, Tabloid websites, Official CNN or other websites, etc.)
Why do I ask this? I don't know, but I thought it would be interesting to see where most of us first hear about stuff we end up posting on this forum.

-----------------------------------------------------

I'll start: I usually hear news first on the radio, from KCBS, the greatest news radio station on the West Coast. That's because 75% of the time I'm hearing the news I'm driving for my job. And I drive alot.

LOL.

There's no such thing as "breaking news" on TV, Radio or Newspaper. Not unless it's investigative journalism, but let's face it - there's bugger-all of that these days!

No, anything that's on the Radio, TV or in a newspaper is merely paraphrasing what's already appeared on the 'Net in some spot or another.

I'm constantly amazed at how slow TV and Newspapers are to pick up on news coverage - sometimes days after the events.

Radio: 101.5 FM Reshet (Israeli station, cool music, sh1t hot talk shows) and BBC world service.

TV: Never

Internet: BBC, CNN, Ha Aretz (israeli leftwing newspaper site in english), Debka (very hit and miss, a large amount of salt to be taken before believing anything, but they are very quick when theyre right)

Newspapers: Never

11 year old daughter: Shes such a bloody gossip. ;)

I also get text messages from UK chums when the sh1t hits the fan over there.

Where do I hear breaking news first? It depends on where I am. :P

If @ work: FM radio tuned to NPR and BBC.

If @ work on break (like lunch): Internet using MSNBC.

If @ local fitness club: TV set to CNN.

If @ home: TV set to NBC News With Tom Brokaw or local news.

I learn all the news from the DBB. Not really too much political news (unless I go to ethics & commentary) but more like "WE'VE FOUND A GIANT TERD ON MARS" type of stuff...

O yea and I watch the Daily Show.

I don't look at news sites, don't get newspapers, don't watch much TV and I usually listen to music radio stations... so it would most likely be some random entertainment station but it would theoretically be possible for me to be completely oblivious to an event for several days. If it was a major disaster I might hear about it from a friend.

I read a weekly magazine with quality news and opinions cover-to-cover, so I know about things with maximum a week delay.

I never watch TV, never listen to the radio. I skim the newspaper sometimes, but mostly for opinion pieces rather than just news.

News in itself is not really interesting IMHO. It's what people write about news in opinion articles and columns that is interesting.

News by on telelvision is just hyped up trash, or boring(CNN)

News by any author in a newspaper is one sided by the authors perspective, (newsday = good example, NYT) aka political rags

News by the internet OMFGYGTKM (few exceptions to a point, CNN(..|.,))...most are worse than tabloids.. Look where Ace gets his knowledge :x

News by radio is almost as bad as the newspapers. Unless of course you are listening to AM band where all dinosaurs go who just want "facts and times" with no INTERPRETATIONS (AM almost catches my VOTE)

 What you guys should do is JUST PUT IT DOWN for a week, come back with a FRESH perspective

Google, mostly, for honest to goodness news and world events. DBB for commentary, and "big stuff" news--it's a nice filter. And perhaps a blog or two on occasion. Very frequently, I first hear about things from my husband.

Why read the newspaper when most newspapers post the stories online for free? When you buy the paper you pay for the paper and ink... online there is much less overhead and they make just as much in advertising.

Bubbalou, don't even get started on Newsday... the News 12 of the print world. :P

I actually used to be a BIG listener of AM radio, until WCBS Newsradio really started to get on my nerves, because it was more and more apparent that they were slanting. I tried 1010 WINS for a while, but that too was a bit annoying.

Uh... Word-of-Mouth. My mother wakes me up and says, "JULIAN, DID YOU HEAR?! Blah blah.."

Which in turn leads me to pay attention to the radio, and then look it up on the Internet or DBB (:P) after class. :)

I like:

Best of the Web Today - fairly conservative, quite entertaining
Little Green Footballs - specifically targetting anti-semitism and anti-Americanism in the media. One of the major players in the Dan Rather forged memos scandal...
Kesher Talk - a socially liberal Jewish blog
Iraq The Model - an Iraqi writes about life in Iraq

These are the ones I spend the most time reading, and I usually follow links from each of them to "affiliated" blogs. These are the ones that I'm most into.
