Just mentioning this. Quake III source code could go open source by end of 2005. Perhaps checking into its network code may provide better solutions for Descent 3 network code.
Also I run a linux dedicated server, and have noticed that it randomly crashes with a Signal 11 after it prints a message along the lines of "Received corrupted network code" or something like that. A Signal 11 is a crash btw. Perhaps this should be looked into before release of the 1.5 patch as this means linux dedicated servers would be un-reliable.

Hey SkyNet, what's that server's address? Sence PXO went down I haven't played any D3 online because it takes too long to find a game (if there even are any anymore) that I can connect to without getting the "levels don't match" message. So, sence it's a linux dedicated server then I should be able to connect with my linux D3? I would love to play!SkyNet wrote:Also I run a linux dedicated server, and have noticed that it randomly crashes with a Signal 11 after it prints a message along the lines of "Received corrupted network code" or something like that. All right, I'll give you the fact that 1.5 is all but dead, but D3 is by no means dying. We have just as many people as we did when PXO was up, if not more. As I've said countless times before, the extra 15-20 seconds required to play D3 without PXO are no big deal. I don't think that many people besides yourself let a minor inconvenience stop them from playing.

Lets face it, its never going to happen. Not now, not later, not ever. We have been mislead time and time again. Stop hoping for a 1.5 and move on people. That Descent 2 clone will be released sooner than the patch ever will, and by then we will probably forget about D3 altogether.
Just move on people.

C'mon someone who knows what's going on - don't leave us hanging here - please tell us wot's happening!Top Wop wrote:Lets face it, its never going to happen. Not now, not later, not ever. Very spiteful of you, but you see the point I was trying to bring up is that we have been waiting so long for the patch that it wont matter anymore once its released. PXO is down for months now and people have moved on or have lost interest. Never in my post did I say or imply that he should drop everything/forget about what is more important and get to work on it.Ferno wrote:You're right Topwop.. a patch is more important than a new kid. what were we thinking?
So get your head screwed on straight and stop putting words into my mouth.
Then maybe you should drop the cynical tone. =PFerno wrote:it has nothing to do with spite Topwop. the guy's a father now and his kid has priority.
If you want to go down that road (and have me climb up your ***) I suggest you drop the insolent tone.
Even if the 1.5 patch came out, it would still be too little, too late, and we still wouldn't have Jess. =P ^_~
D3 1.5 is dead. Smoke that noob and move on.
BTW, I give Suncho credit for one thing, without PXO, we don't see newbies saying "Hey, I can't see the games!"

I think it would be possible for the Descent3 community to pick back up. Some people who have left, having had a break, will probably be getting the itch in their trigger/mouse finger again eventually.
@ Kevin: I'm behind you. Let's see that patch! I know how it can be with programming, and then you've got providing for your family and spending time with them.
Now I don't actually know Kevin, but I think that if he had just given up on the 1.5 patch that he would have let us know.

We'll never see an open source release. Don't you get it? :P Kevlar and the rest of Outrage/Volition have given up on D3. They're doing the same thing they did when 1.5 was supposed to come out. Remember that "announcement?" =PGehRehmee wrote:If Descent 3 is really as dead as it sounds, how much longer will it be before we see an open source release a la Descent 1 and 2? If we're able to just do our own 1.5 patch soon, maybe Kevin's just figuring it's easier to wait?
Yup, and if I remember correctly didn't it have something in it where you didn't have to login to PXO to view all the game servers? I still think it was a mistake not to release the 1.5 patch for Windows when it was ready to go. The vast majority of D3 players use Windows anyways. Let the 5-10% of D3ers who don't play using Windows wait.Duper wrote:*sigh*....
no, maybe he has a new baby and is trying handle Mac code and Linux.
we know that the regular windows ver is done.... has been for some time.
It really makes no difference to me anyways if it comes out or not since I don't even play D3, it just always struck me as silly to wait until the other two versions were ready to release the whole thing. That way the other 90-95% of the D3 community could play and not biatch about this all the time.
