WinXP D1 Problems.

Post by Lippy »

Hey all... I just installed Descent 1 onto my XP (SP2) machine to relive the old days, and am having a bunch of problems.

First, the game was very jumpy at the fresh install. After reading some posts on this board I installed the newest DIX version. Thinks seem to work ok - but I can't seem to get the game to run full screen. And when I do - there is still the Microsoft window bar at the top. Is there a way to get rid of this?

Second problem is - I am a keyboard player. Occasionally the game freezes due to the numerous keys being pressed (and I hear that Windows DOINK sound). If I let go of all keys - and then press another - the game starts running fine again. Is there a setting I can tweak to avoid this problem?

Thanks everyone in advance for any help you can provide!

*sigh*

Turn sounds off in Windows. The sound theme just uses memory. D1 might be slowing down when windows tries to load and play the file for too many multiple keystrokes.

Go to the Control Panel in Windows and double click (or single, however you have it setup) Sounds & Audio Devices. Click the sound tab and in the drop down menu select No Sounds. A dialog window will come up asking you if you want to save your current theme, say no. Hit apply and close all that down.

To run fullscreen you need to have the -fullscreen toggle set in your d1x.ini which can be found wherever you installed your descent. Open up windows explorer and go to your descent dir, double click on the d1x.ini and put in -fullscreen.

Here are some others you should make sure you have. Some might already be in it, if they aren't, just add them in and save the file. After that it might be a good idea to right click the d1x.ini and go to properties and check it as read-only.

-pps 6

-noredundancy
-playermessages
-maxfps 80
-msgcolorlevel 3
-nicefps
-notitles
-dynamicsockets
-gl_mipmap
-cockpit 2
-gl_reticle 1

Hope this helps...
