Dead PC - 5 volt problem?

Post by Mobius »

PC won't boot. It seems to be hardware. PC crashes with what appears to be video corruption at various points in the boot process. It aint video card though coz I have tried 3 different video cards in it - and the other two are "known good".

Motherboard reports 5 volt line is 4.49volts and 5.51 volts. Allother voltages are within 0.05%. Think that might be it. Do you think I'm right?

Probably get a new 450 Watt unit today.

Something's definitely loading it down. Did you pop the cover and look for any damaged components/shorts?

Yeah, I built the thing. There are no shorts or loose wires etc. Installing a new PSU tonight to test my theory. Hope I'm right. Dead motherboard would mean having to spend $1000 instead of $80.

Thats $1000NZD Ace...

According to x-rates thats $667.10 USD. (rounded up slightly) Thats still VERY expensive seeing thats about six times what we (USA) would normally pay for a motherboard.

No point in replacing atiquated motherboard with new, antiquated motherboard...

$1000 (or more) for:

Motherboard
RAM
CPU
PSU.

Plus another $600 for a decent PCI Express GFx card.

Make it $1600...

Anyway, PSU doesn't seem to be the problem, and now the PC is booting correctly - if rather underclocked.
