why do my streaming vids just stop downloading?

Post by roid »

i'm new to broadband (256/64 ADSL), only had it a bit over a week. so i hope this is normal or something. , or perhaps easily remedied.

i'll be watching a streaming vid. it will start playing and stuff, and then after a RANDOM amount of time, between 2 seconds and 2 minutes. it will just stop.
desperate to miss as little xpize footage as i could, i grabbed a prog from tucows to moniter the webtraffic.

and here it is, it's just as i predicted. it just plain... STOPS. for what seems to be no reason.
(of course how much i'm buffering governs how soon the video will actually stop, after the traffic itself stops)

if i want it to start again, i just press stop, and play again, then it just goes again, why the ★■◆● it doens't do this automaticlly when it drops out like this is beyond me.

why the hell is it just stopping? it's like it's getting bored or something.

each horizontal line in the diagram represents 1 minute. the tall lines are where it's buffering, it would stop after only a few seconds, so i pressed stop and play again, and then again, and then it finally played steadily for a minute or so. AND THEN STOPS AGAIN LIKE A ★■◆●@!@!

why?

no i use win2k with 256meg of ram. windows media player 9.

actually.. now i think about it, websites have been doing similar things. the DBB especially i am having troubles with, it will sometimes only load a halfpage, then lag - FOREVERMORE (well... until i come back to it in a few minutes to try again, then it works for a bit and perhaps does the same thing again).

it's strange coz it gives me no error messages, it just lags...

ie: right now, editing this post, it's only loaded less than half of the smilies on teh left of the edit window, it's lagging trying to load the rest.

i thought it was mozillafirebird-PR1 causing the problem, since i only started noticing the lagggggggging a little while after i installed it.

anyway i'd like to know something about this, perhaps someone knows what the lingo termanology for this is called. is it just called lag right? or is it some special magical lag coz it's on DSL and ★■◆●ing annoying?

see if you can tweak your connect, lots of tools here www.dslreports.com. also use your firewall log as a guide to whats using your in/out going connect, maybe you have a app using bandwidth that you dont know about.

Try pinging multiple sites to see what your ping times are like. If it spikes between you and your ISP, its a connection problem between you and your ISP.

it's on my personal pc, it's conencted via cat5.
my router has wireless 802.3g and inbuilt firewall. it's not too shabby at all.

right now i'm typing this from the other pc in the house, connected via wireless 802.3g. and i just notice that i'm not having any of the webpage lag problems on this pc.

all the pages are loading fine. it should be noted that this pc also uses the same install of firefox, so that probabaly isn't at fault.

i shoudl try streaming something on this pc.

dsl reports suggested to tweak my recieve window setting. and now that i've done that i don't seem to be having the trouble with websites anymore.

considering my other pc wasn't having this toruble, i'm left wondering why (and/or indeed "IF") my receive window was setup differently on my personal pc, but not the other.

If your other PC runs WinXP then it's already got a larger receive window.

I highly doubt receive windows and MTU are the cause of this problem.
