Once you register you can change the theme.
We are trying to remedy that as we speak.punisher wrote:I know it's a brand new site, but somebody needs to change the forum colors asap. they're butt ugly.
I'm sure you do.DigiJo wrote:comment:

Way, way too much bump mapping going on. It almost looks like you're compensating for low-poly models. Also, the fullbrightness of the room might have something to do with it; no room is 100% lit everywhere. The lighting definitely needs to be adjusted.

Well, given that they represent and unfinished piece of work - from what the FAQ says about them - It looks okay aside from the fact everything looks like its made of metal.
That they chose to display this first seems like a slap in the face. Its like Jeff Foxworthy's nekkid grandma joke. You wanna see naked women? Here's your grandma!
Really, I could have waited a while longer for better screenshots than that. I think what we are all waiting to see is the ship - cause face it, everytime you see that reticle in the center of the shot, you feel like you're sitting in a pyro looking at that pipe.
Not that I'm complaining - just my thoughts on the screenshots.

heh I was about to say that the screenshots suck. =)DCrazy wrote:Way, way too much bump mapping going on. It almost looks like you're compensating for low-poly models. I agree with DCrazy. I also couldn't think of what was wrong with the screenshots until he said something. It looks like the images were taken from the renders in Donkey Kong Country. =P Also, the HUD sucks. It's too simple. =P It's cool that it shows the system specs, though. How about making the track title like a marquee in case it's too long?
By the way, Suncho said that Core Decision "looks good and runs faster than Descent 3." But how can it run faster than Descent 3 if it only runs at 287 fps? =P
I just looked at the Pump Room screenshot. Yup, way too much lighting. I'm blinded. -_- =P
Have some patience people. This is why they release stuff like this so they can get some feedback. All of this is in early stages, nothing is set in stone yet.
Sometimes It pays to register and read the FAQ page· Those first 2 screenshots look horrible. Is your game really going to be that ugly?
Heavens no! Nothing in those screenshots will be in the final game. They are merely snapshots of an interim step in the development process.
· Then what's the point of showing us?
You asked. We listened. The screenshots simply demonstrate that we are working on something.

It sort of looks like one of those fan art CGI renderings from the days of Descent 2.
If you look really closely, though, you'll notice that the pipe in the non-HUD screenshot must be fairly high-poly - it's hard to see the polygonal edges on it. Bump mapping is on overdrive, though, and the light is really really bright.
Feels a bit like "Hey, I just learned Maya, look at this room I built!"

Perhaps the screenshots were put up there solely to satiate the appetites of all these hungry Descenters. Just to show that there is actually a game in production and it atcually does run. It's gotta be a tough call on the part of highoctane. Do we post these obviously premature screenies to prove that Core Decicsion isn't vaporware, or do we hold off until we have something provacative and enticing to show. Tough decision. Personally I woulda said screw the naysayers and waited.
It was my suggestion to have the theme color of the site blue, instead of red, to avoid any flashback association with Forsaken. And after that, you can change your theme colors as you wish once registered. Nice site too, I also liked the screenshots, but they don't show much, just one single room with a pipe and a puddle.

There are other ways to demonstrate that something isn't vaporware. Show some developer diaries or conceptual artwork for the game. Show mock-ups of weapons or ship designs. If you're going to show a screenshot, at the very least have it be halfway flattering rather than a very obvious test. For a game that's been under development for at least a year (two years?), I'd expect a bit more in terms of artistic direction.punisher wrote:Perhaps the screenshots were put up there solely to satiate the appetites of all these hungry Descenters.
