The New Oral Roberts

Post by woodchip »

From his podium on high, Oral Edwards has proclaimed to His worshippers His new found miraculous powers to heal the afflicted. Instead of praying though, all you have to do is vote for Him and is Vietnam hero running mate and you will HEALED! For He has come down from the mount with secret powers untold:

"Edwards Stem Cell Vision: 'We will stop juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other debilitating diseases... When John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going get up out of that wheelchair and walk again."

Perhaps what John really means is he is attempting to open up another area for lawsuits as stem cell researchers have discovered the use of stem cells in lab rats has produced cancerous tumors. Or perhaps Johnboy forgets that there is no federal ban on stem cell research, just that there is the limit on how much the feds will give to the cause. Convenient that the two Johns ( kinda sounds like a pair of toilets eh?) forget that Bush was the FIRST president to authorise any amount of money by the federal govt. for stem cell research.

The Johns ( now it's sounding more like a couple of hooker customers) fail to understand that cord blood and adult stem cell research look like the more promising areas for positive results.

For you who are susceptable to charlatens and demagogs vote for the Johns for they will HEAL you!

i hope you do actually know what stem cells are woodchip. you and every other mammal are currently chock full of them.
stem cells, and moreso spore cells, are a truly exciting field of research.

what you have reactionarily said there is nothing more than further evidence that "research" causes cancer in rats.

Yay, if Kerry and Edwards are elected, everyone gets a pony! I stole that from Wizbang, but it was perfect.

yea, so at the expense of a much smaller amount of embryos...let's let every single person that has any kind of disease just perish, because damnit, I believe that it's their time, and we shouldn't do all we can to save them. F*** THEM! Right boys? Hoo-ah!

Oh hell, why not just go all the way and promise they can resurrect the dead? We've crossed the line from unrealistic campaign promises to the absolutely absurd. Say it with me... George Bush killed Superman!

Zuruck, if you believe I am anti-embryonic-stem-cell-research, you are sadly mistaken, and your assumptions are wholly transparent.

Perhaps Roidy you should research a little more yourself:

"It is not widely reported in the media that embryonic stem cells have a number of specific medical risks, and most people are unaware of the fact that they have caused tumours when implanted for therapeutic purposes, or have caused the destruction of normal healthy tissue around the transplant area. This applies to cultures which have been pre-differentiated as well as to undifferentiated embryonic stem cells, since even minute numbers of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells have caused virulent tumours"

ahh EMBRYONIC stem cells. ok.

stem cells are in all of us, they arn't only in babies. babies have them in greater numbers though since "these shoes are made for growin, and that's just what they'l do".

but stem cells are in all of us, they are used for repair of tissue. spore cells are more amazing coz they can be quick frozen. when not frozen the body can quickly 'turn them on', they quickly multiply, and then turn into stem cells. this is one of the processes that allows our bodys to repair as quick as they do.

the research is studying how spore cells can be harvested from our bodies, multiplied by immense factors, turned into stem cells, and then turned in new completely natural and unrejectable tissue and perhaps even ORGANS - suited to the patient they were harvested from.

no babeh's involved.

as of this time i'm unsure if undifferentiated in your quote means "a sorting process to choose the stem cells that seem most suited for transplant into a foreign host without causing rejection complications", or "cells harvested direct from the transplant patient, cultured, then retransplanted".

If you read my opening post Roid, you'd see I mentioned cord blood and adult stem cells. These two areas are showing much promise.

Roid, in the context of Woodchip's post, undifferentiated refers to the specialization that a stem cell undergoes, becoming a tissue cell, T-cell, etc. Nothing to do with scientists differentiating between good samples and bad samples, for example.

Ample "-amples" for ya? :P

hmmm...i don't remember saying resurrect the dead...i said we should do what we can to help the living. who knows, what if all the research could lead to a cure for cancer or something?

Z, I'm referring to Kedwards, not you. When a candidate makes a promise that everyone knows cannot be fulfilled (as in Edwards claiming the lame will miraculously walk under a Kerry administration), well, you might as well go for broke and grab the biggest promise you can make, such as raising the dead.

I believe that is incorrect. Bone marrow is a type of stem cell IIRC.
