Icon size is 64x64, so anything larger is shrunk down. Actually any image is forced to 64x64.

And it's looked down upon to have an avatar over 20k or so. 100k is the board image limit, so that's your extreme maximum.

If you have trouble compressing an image, just ask one of us who have more experience in the matter. There really isn't any good reason for an image as small as our avatars to be all that large.
