This is the view from the "Spirit" Mars Rover that is approaching the red planet.

I shouldn't re-edit posts and steal more bandwith

So is this just another lander that is going to show us the sky is pink and ground is red?

I find this interesting and all, but what is this one going to do? Check for life? Water?

Why does it have to do something special?

Just the research, materials and science necessary to make this possible have long-reaching societal benefits.

If we learn something useful as a result, so much the better.

First there were the dinosaurs, but they were too big and fat, so they died and made oil. And then the Arabs came, and they all drove Mercedes Benzes....

I used to have a shirt for a probe named Cassini heading for Saturn. This was a really old shirt and I wouldn't be surprised if it was probe you mentioned Warlock.

Every 2 minutes. Image

Okay, it's moving at about 91km per minute, and right now I'm going to bed... So when I get up in the morning, that Mars should be even bigger.

By my calculations the probe should go from range 41640km (I think, can't remember *sigh*) to '0' in approx. 7 hours 26 minutes. Though my calculations are always wrong and range 0 means hitting the planet Image

//Edit - Looking at those figuires again, I think I'm totally wrong. Hey, theres nothing wrong with doing a bit of simple mathematics at 1:18am after being awake for 19 hours. Nothing wrong with it at all Image

Our local imax theatre had a special in person thing from like 8pm-1am last night of Spirit's landing on Mars. It was pretty amazing.. first there was a talk in detail about Spirit's entry as well as what its goals were for the mission. The animation was amazing. It was apparently made by some 22 year old at Cornell. http://origin.mars5.jpl.nasa.gov/galler ... ation.html They also had a live telephone interview with one of the head op guys at JPL which was pretty cool. And then a live broadcast of mission control at JPL.. everyone was pretty nervous (as to be expected, considering the first one was lost). It was pretty cool when the first signals arrived confirming that Spirit was indeed on the surface of Mars. It was something that most of those people have spent a lot of their lives dreaming of. Hopefully 'Opportunity' on January 24th has the same success.

The first pictures from the surface were great. Image Entire panoramas, you could see the horizen, and there's even a handy boulder nearby for it to investigate. One of the people in mission control commented "Our rover is a rock magnet!" Image

Pity the pictures were b/w though. Image

The Pictures we are seeing right now are from the Navigation Cammeras. The full color/panoramic pictures should be showing up in a day or 2 when the rover has had time to charge it's batteries.
