Killzone (PS2)

Post by Tyranny »

Don't know if any of you have played this game yet. It was dubbed the 'Halo Killer' when in development, basically Sony's answer to it anyways. When it comes right down to it though, you can't compare the two games. The only real thing they have in common is they're both FPSers on a console.

I've had it since day one and personally I'm addicted to the online play. It's sorta like Socom meets future weapons/armor meets first person meets better online play. Normally I despise FPS games on consoles because of my years of experience with games like Doom, Quake1-3, UT, UT2K3 etc. Usually console FPS games can't hold a candle to their PC counterparts due to the mouse controls being superior to using an analog gamepad.

However, it isn't that difficult to become just as good with the default controls as you are using a mouse on the PC, just took me a few short hours of playing to get used to it. All but the sniper rifle, pistol and the two default guns for either faction in the game are heavy assault style or high impact concussion projectiles.

There have been several complaints that character movement is too slow. You can only walk or sprint at any given time and while sprinting you can't fire. You can't set to sprint all the time either and the longer you sprint your sprint guage will decrease making you tire and have to walk to recharge it again. which means you have to be more strategic in your movements, knowing when to sprint and when to just tough it out and walk.

Once you realize the scale of the weapons you're carrying you finally make peace with the slownees of your characters. Not to mention that one of the factions (The Helghast) have heavy body armor where as the ISA faction does not and therefor are somewhat faster in walking and sprinting. Some of the guns are just as tall as the characters if you stood them upright :P

Another thing is each weapon has very unique reloading animations. You'll be dead very quickly if you don't master how to reload while in battle without being killed since the action is faster then your reload times. Sometimes the best thing to do is just switch to another weapon such as the pistol or another weapon that is already loaded to finish off the battle before you have a very short reprieve to reload. Cooking grenades also becomes a very effective strategy for gaining extra kills in battle.

The graphics are top notch for the most part. One of the most dynamic looking PS2 games I've seen. Between myself and my roommate we've got close to 80 PS2 games, so we know what a lot of them look like :P Sound quality is just as dynamic as the graphics and the gameplay.

The gamemodes are some of the same favorites we've become accustomed to over the years. Deathmatch (FFA), Team Deathmatch, Supply Drop (Sorta like Capture the Flag), Defend and Destroy (Defend your base, destroy theirs), Assault (One team assaults, the other defends), Domination (Team tries to gain control and hold the most switches). The Singleplayer campaign has a detailed storyline and lots of fighting. It also provides lots of stages and levels to master your aiming with weapons that have heavy kickbacks :P Smooth loading times online and offline.

The voice chat at times can be a bit buggy. You can say things shortly after you die but when the game goes to reset you and respawn you cut out. Once you're back in the game you can then talk again. Some people can't seem to figure out how to use their mic properly, but that happens in Socom as well :P There is no timelimit while you talk that I can see so there are times where people chat flood, but I've only had that happen twice in about a week of playing already. The statistical tracker logs player rank, playing time, games played, games won, kills/deaths, headshots and you are given game medals (Three good, 2 bad) Berzerker, Brutal, Hawk, Fodder & Coward.

So, if you have a PS2 and a broadband connection and enjoy blowing shiat up I highly recommend this game. Join the cause now :) If you have it already or decide to try it out I can be found online as either 'Tyranny' or 'Vampyro', but mostly Vampyro.

Official Killzone Website - Still under construction. Has 'some' info and screenshots. Latest Flash player required.

Don't know, I've finished first tied for first, second or tied for second in all but a few games and those few mostly came in the first day it came out.

Did you just have Sephiroth for a little bit before you added -sM- to it? It could have easily been someone else or something.

Sorry guys. The link I posted was for the official US site which isn't quite done yet. However there is a website that is dedicated to Killzone that is complete.

Killzone Website - It's the UK website and it has tons more features then the previous I listed.

Doesn't seem like anyone else really cares. Bunch of elitists :P
