Its been expected that Powell would resign for some time. Hes undoubtedly fed up with saying one thing and then having Bush and the Defense department say something completely different.DCrazy wrote:Powell and Rumsfeld are expected to resign soon as well.
But Rumsfeld I was not expecting.
Tis a good day today. Hopefully their replacements will be less.....facist, for lack of a better word.

With all due respect Testi ... Will is right. You criticize Ashcroft because he is a Christian and because he enforced the laws (which you don't like) that he was hired to enforce. Can you give us some concrete reasons why he needs to go other than personal preferences?
I don't particularly like the dude either ... that doesn't mean he isn't doing his job.

Ashcroft also repeatedly disagreed with the Pentagon on how it was treating the prisoners at Guantanamo, who also did not get lawyers or due process, according to the official.
Ashcroft, however, was repeatedly overruled by senior White House officials who chose to side with the Pentagon. Even though he disagreed and had been overruled, Ashcroft "took the heat" for those cases.
And in case you are the "I don't trust anything from FOX" type, here is an interesting article from Reason (no friend of Ashcroft). The article is mostly an attack on Kerry's civil liberties record, however it uses Ashcroft as a counter-example. Should be pretty educational for those that "think" Ashcroft is any kind of fascist.
On the other hand, I can't say I'm upset to see him go.

I could care less what he said about the war. What he did and attempted to do to people in this country is what I'm thinking. He had no trouble trying to circumvent ppl's rights in order for corporate criminals to pillage a little bit more. And it's not that he's Christian, it's how Christian he is.
TB you have no basis of judgement. If you were in charge of everything, people would still be burned at the stake.

Since Woodchip asked:
As a (former) Oregonian, I got pissed at Ashcroft because he fought a persistent and expensive legal battle to end Oregon's physician assisted suicide law. He must've spent quite a few federal tax dollars on it, plus he likely caused Oregon's coffers to take a hit while funding the defense. In fact, it was just announced that he made one more play as he was leaving office.
So Ashcroft actually scored a 3-in-1 by landing on the non-Genghis side of the following issues:
(1) patients' rights
(2) states' rights
(3) irresponsible federal spending
