Tinfoil hat theory: he resigned so that he can take his new job as chief justice of the supreme court.

ROFLOL!
I wish someone would float that theory in the mainstream just so I could go long on shares of Rolaids in the Blue States.

Its been expected that Powell would resign for some time. Hes undoubtedly fed up with saying one thing and then having Bush and the Defense department say something completely different.

But Rumsfeld I was not expecting.

Tis a good day today. Hopefully their replacements will be less.....facist, for lack of a better word.

Hitler was a successful fascist. At best, Ashcroft is an oppressive nutcase religion freak. I don't see all that much difference. I bet Ashcroft considered staying up 'till 11 a sin, and would happily have outlawed any outdoor activity after 11pm.

You've got to be kidding me...actually, I realize that you're not, and that scares me more than anything Ashcroft could do.

Nah, not really. I might be dramatizing a tad, but that's so The Real World watchers can follow along.

I'd be the safest person you'd ever find in government.

So just what was wrong with Ashcroft? What exactly did he do to earn the vitriolic comments from the left?
He was, after all, appointed and unlike Reno never had something like Waco to hang on his trophy wall.

So far all I hear is he enforced the Patriot Act and believed in god. I guess that makes every christian policeman and FBI agent in america a fascist that ought to die

With all due respect Testi ... Will is right. You criticize Ashcroft because he is a Christian and because he enforced the laws (which you don't like) that he was hired to enforce. Can you give us some concrete reasons why he needs to go other than personal preferences?

I don't particularly like the dude either ... that doesn't mean he isn't doing his job.

FYI:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,138080,00.html wrote: According to a senior Justice Department official, though Ashcroft was frequently "attacked and vilified" for allegedly ignoring civil liberties, he was actually the voice of restraint and reason in high-level meetings about the War on Terror, repeatedly insisting the country would be best served by sticking to constitutional principles in its treatment of U.S. citizens captured as enemy combatants. Ashcroft also repeatedly disagreed with the Pentagon on how it was treating the prisoners at Guantanamo, who also did not get lawyers or due process, according to the official.

Ashcroft, however, was repeatedly overruled by senior White House officials who chose to side with the Pentagon. Even though he disagreed and had been overruled, Ashcroft "took the heat" for those cases.

And in case you are the "I don't trust anything from FOX" type, here is an interesting article from Reason (no friend of Ashcroft). The article is mostly an attack on Kerry's civil liberties record, however it uses Ashcroft as a counter-example. Should be pretty educational for those that "think" Ashcroft is any kind of fascist.

On the other hand, I can't say I'm upset to see him go.

I'm glad Ashcroft is gone, but to echo what otherone said, things like the patriot act have had bipartisan support.

Ashcroft lost to a dead guy in his bid for the Senate. That alone gives me reson to question him.

I could care less what he said about the war. What he did and attempted to do to people in this country is what I'm thinking. He had no trouble trying to circumvent ppl's rights in order for corporate criminals to pillage a little bit more. And it's not that he's Christian, it's how Christian he is.

TB you have no basis of judgement. If you were in charge of everything, people would still be burned at the stake.

Since Woodchip asked:

As a (former) Oregonian, I got pissed at Ashcroft because he fought a persistent and expensive legal battle to end Oregon's physician assisted suicide law. He must've spent quite a few federal tax dollars on it, plus he likely caused Oregon's coffers to take a hit while funding the defense. In fact, it was just announced that he made one more play as he was leaving office.

So Ashcroft actually scored a 3-in-1 by landing on the non-Genghis side of the following issues:

(1) patients' rights
(2) states' rights
(3) irresponsible federal spending

I just remembered he covered up a bare breasted statue in the background of the room he gave press conferences in because the press shot the camera angle of him to look like he was balancing a giant tit on his head..lol!

If as Genghis states, it is inexcusable for a public official to promote his religious beliefs via federal lawsuit on a issue approved by a states electorate. Federal govt. had no business getting involved in a right to die issue simply because the atty. general was against it for personal reasons.

I don't like what Ashcroft has done because mainly the patriot act can be used to access my medical records if private american clinics set up shop here. even when i haven't done anything wrong.
