Firefox 1.0 (Not Preview!) is out!

Post by Avder »

So far I'd have to say that I like it. I've been using plain Mozilla for the past few months and definatly like the tabbed browsing. I'd have used Firefox, except I dont like using "Beta" software for things. But now 1.0 is out, and now that I'm using it I'm really starting to like it alot. It even gave me back the one feature of IE that I missed: Middle-Click = Autoscroll.

So far Ive installed AdBlock, PrefsBar, and Mouse Gestures. All are working just great. The preferences and bookmarks import worked great, and theres even a search engine box right at the top of the screen.

Yeah, I fully endorse this browser. The only issue I have is that the bookmarks folder isnt included on the bookmarks toolbar like you can have it in Mozilla, but Ive found a way around that already.

Anyone have any really nice extensions theyd like to reccomend for Firefox customization?

Middle click used to be how you opened links in a new tab(even up to v1PR), how does 1.0 handle it?

Middle click on a link still opens it in a new tab. Middle click on anything else -> autoscroll.

I just hope they FINALLY made a working download manager. Before you hit pause, and when you hit resume it just sat there and the download corrupts. I have yet to test the DL manager. I am tired of using these shitty 3rd party DL managers. Why does this class of utility software have to be so shitty and packed with bombarding advertisements?

I also hope they fix the random crashes. There is nothing more annoying than spending at least an hour browsing with multiple tabs open and suddently having to loose all of that information because the program decides its time to ★■◆● up and crash. >:(

download managers are dependant on servers co-operating with them.

Do applications in general have a habit of crashing on you Top Wop?

because some people like to customize how their broswer toolbars and tool functions appear on the screen.....DUH!!!

FireFox Tool Bars

because i cant move my address bar to its own line i cant view super long addresses easily

IE 6 Tool bars
now notice here, because my address bar has a entire line of screen width to its own, i can view much longer addresses without having to scroll across the bar.

THAT is why i ask if they added custom tool bar capability

Ace:
View->Toolbars->Customize

Move everything around to fit your taste.

Ace, right click an empty spot on the toolbar and click Add New Toolbar. Then move the Address bar to this toolbar. Done.

Because not everyone has broadband like you and people need the ability to resume a partial download.

Topwop: Firefox allows resuming broken downloads. It also allows pausing while you download other stuff. No need for a download manager with Firefox.

Oh - one bug which used to show up frequently in 0.8 - and haven't seen fro a while, but it might still be around: You use firefox to download a file, and when it says it is complete, you look in the destination folder, and it's not there! It's still cached though, so try and download the file again - and it completes in about 1 second - then you file is there.

I know that, thats why I was asking if they fixed that feature as it was shoddy in previous builds. I have yet to find a large file to test this out though...

Daum. Check out the memory usage with 1.0, it's down to only(heh) 20megs. v1PR was like 54megs or so, wasn't it? Good to see they shaped that up some.

i think the amount of memory it takes up is dependant on how many tabs you have open.

I had several tabs open and Firefox used up nearly 74 megs of memory! But that was with the PR.

And yes, their built in download manager is fully functional. 8)
