It's truly a shame that such an awesome piece of software had to be swallowed by AOHell and doomed to it's current fate.

Well, we'll always love oldversions for carrying a zillion and 1 versions of winamp.

Unfortunately once a program has been developed there's nothing more to be done. All software is destined to this fate. (For instance, how many more features does one need in a word processor?)
Winamp is a good program, and unless we get another revolution in the way music is stored, there's nothing more that could be added to the program. And with a freeware business model, there's no future returns after the product has been produced.
On the bright side, Microsoft is likely to reach this point someday.

^^^ Good point. Besides, there's always WMP10.

For watching movies that I download.
Maybe DVDs, but that's why I have a flatscreen TV and a dvd player.

WMP is too damn obtrusive to be a good audio tool for me.

Winamp is probably the best app that i've used to play nearly all of my content. Its a sad shame, and I wont be loosing my copy of it any time soon. But eventually there will be an alternative that would be like Winamp, mayby XMMS when its ported to Windows.

I'm thinking of changing all of my file associations to Winamp. I just found a few plugins that allow playing of (S)NES, Genesis, and Gameboy music, and I know there's almost an infinite amount of others out there. It really is a great piece of software, and despite the loss of its production team, it will continue to whip llama ass.

Doesn't WMP10 only work on XP? If so, than I can't use it because I don't have XP, nor do I have any intention of getting it anytime soon.

Poor WinAMP. He was such a good dog. I never even seen this coming. This is like when your walking in the street on a rainy night and a truck runs you over, then nobady finds your body, but no one could care less because no one in your life loves you.

I thought Winamp would go commercial, that is, charge monies. I never even THOT it would die.

Oh, puh-leez. Playing music and word processor are completely different. Creating documents requires the user to exhibit creativity through the software, winamp is a utility for exhibiting someone else's creativity.

Very doubtful that the downfall of Microsoft will be that all it's products suddenly reach this holy grail point of "perfection" such that they never need to be modified again. If that were the case, then computers are going to reach an equilibrium point and all software/hardware companies are going to have issues.

Windows will never be done because the hardware and user needs and computer uses keep changing. Winamp ran out of steam because there was really only one primary need: play music. I doubt that it will never need ANY more changes, but having only one very specific goal, you're likely to run out of ideas at some point.

On topic..people are surprised? I guessed it the day AOL announced it was unzipping it's pants.

But it's not like Winamp is going to disappear. (As much as MS wishes it would)

Just because AOHell buys something doesn't mean it totally goes down the drain. Especially if the same design teams are still working on said programs. Winamp was one of the few programs AOL had that AOL hadn't totally buttphvcked to death. Sure, Winamp3 was a complete failure, but they made sure that their final breath was a successful one in finishing and releasing Winamp5. That is why this comes as a surprise in some regards.

It will still remain a staple of my desktop until something better comes along. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of the Nullsoft crew. I'd rather use Winamp5 even when its completely outdated then switch over to WMP in the long run anyways.

Besides Testi, didn't you program your own mp3 player? So what do you care

With their annoying lame commercials, and the fact that any AOL user is branded a moron on the spot on just about every BB on the internet....its no small wonder why people are giving AOL the boot.
