Protein Folding via Distributed Computing

Post by Nitrofox125 »

The first research to benefit from the new research will be the Human Proteome Folding Project, launched by the Seattle-based Institute for Systems Biology to study the genetic structure of proteins that cause diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis

Err..... isn't this already being done? This may be on a wider scale, but if I were them, I'd talk to Stanford and get some data that already exists...

Not what I meant, I'm number 28 on the DBB folding team ;)

I meant that this "novel idea" of theirs isn't that novel! And it seems kind of stupid to be doing the same work twice. Seems like it would make more sense for them to combine forces with the Stanford FAH team.

I tend to agree with what you're saying, but the generalized description of what they propose to do doesn't tell us whether they're going to be doing the same thing as Stanford or not. And, even if they were going to do the same thing, it boils down to what academic research is all about. And that is justifying the expediture of grant monies. They're not going to get the money if they let it be known to the grantor that someone else is doing the same thing. Just another example of more people living off of grant money.
