Strange network phenomenon

Post by Top Wop »

I did a simple switch of video cards between 2 computers on my network, I merely returned the Nvidia card from whence I had originaly taken it out. Since then my computer (lets call it Scannerserver) is unable to be accessed by the other computers. Oh, they see Scannerserver, but when I try to access it from these computers I get

"\\Scannerserver\<arbitrary folder> is not accessable. You might not have permission to access this resource. COntact admin if you have privlidges blah balh balh...

The network path was not found."

SO this message is strange, I have no permission, and yet it cant find it? Well which is it for god's sake? This is very strange as I have never had to configure permissions on this p2p setup. And why is it with MS's crappy coding, you fix one thing and another thing comes up that is even more retarded? Cant they get ANYTHING right?

I am able to access other computers just fine from Scannerserver, and the other computers on the network interact just fine with each other, but not Scannerserver. So far I have renamed Scannerserver and changed its workgroup and even re-installing windows sp2, but no no avail. I have no clue what to do next, any ideas?

edit: I am now trying to access my own shared files within the My Network Places on scannerserver, and I get the same error myself.

Hmmmmm... I think I've been having similar problems, which I may know the solution to. I'll get back to you on that - but someone will probably answer it first ;)

This computer is just an arse. Everything can see it but when you try to connect it requests a username and password... which I don't know even though I know every possible combination since I installed everything.

Topwop, try having the other PC's do another seach for it. Might be that icon/connection is corrupted.

Windows firewall is not an issue as it is off.

When I click on View Workgroup Computers in My Network Places I see scannerserver, but when I try to access it I get the same message.

Problem fixed. I did a silly thing where I turned on IP filtering and only allowed one port open in an attempt to get my Teamspeak server to be queried by my website script. I changed it back and tada.

i was gonna suggest to check that `simple file sharing` was enabled cos it can also show the same symptoms if you are using the default xp network wizard to set up your network
