to start, you cant go wrong (or right at that, actually) with a pun like that.

Well, we finally got it done. The band has made a 4 track demo. Mastering isnt great, but it is pretty bloody sweet, considering it was done all by the band and a friend.

I do backing vocals on Stuck In, and Illiterate, and then Stephen does all the leads. It was a great experience, and I'm very happy with how it sounds, despite the mistakes on some of the tracks.

equipment:
80s MIJ Fender Telecaster w/ marshall jackhamme rdist pedal - straight into desk.
Mapex kit, 28" kick, 14" snare, 18" floor tom, and 16" low(?) tom, sibian cymbols.
Bass - The G3, with old steel rotosounds

, into the Trace 4x10 that I oh so adore. I didnt manage to quite get the exact tone I desire, I dont think I ever will from that combo, but it does very very smoov, very sweet, and bassy. Most importantly, I cut thru the mix.

Hope you all enjoy the MP3s, please be open and honest with our stuff - I am aware of the timing in Illiterate and the intros got messed up in a few tracks. It wasnt my fault, since we put the bass down last. haaa!

To be honest i didnt find it too hard.

At times we had problems. When we play live we're not very disciplined on how we approach singing, so we could be playing a verse for as long as we feel like. So i had no idea what the hell I shouldve been doing at times, so I said, lets do vocals then I can follow that.

thanks vince! the mistake at the beginning of Crow wasnt actually Keiths fault; Eon, our "producer", when making the mixdown, the timing got a weebit mixed up...

We all made mistakes on this records, but by the time we were really into it ad getting things rolling we were running out of time to re-do tracks... We're a live band tho, Keith usually is the only guy who doesnt ★■◆● something up!

I also liked 'crow flies HD. If i could make one point. The song is based on Bass and Drums obviously. They have to be a hell of a lot tighter, they aint talking to each other. But i'm sure you knew that allready.

Other than that, me likes. The rest is still downloading.

thx FC. I can understand the tight-issue. but you're the first to say about the talking. Could you please explain a bit more? am i playing too much or just not locked in with keith?

he did keep the drums simple for time issues, but its always good to hear all the honest critism tbh. chers man!

first off... that's an excellent attitude. second... your bass playing is vastly improved over the last thing i heard from you. third... no reason to stop now if it's just 4 people hooking it up... do ALOT of takes. you are doing good young martin.

the ideas are perty solid... it's the execution that is suffering. the style you are playing doesn't require math rock execution, that would basically ruin the feel if you went there, but you and drummer do need to get some clockwork going. teenage angst and slop are an important part of rock n roll but you can't be missing hits by an 1/8th.

i thought the guitar tone was close... but was a bit to mid-rangy. vocs were to low in the mix (common newbie error). the drummer has to work on his timing. bass sound was very good... but you need to worry about the root being on (as in lockin up with the drummer) before worrying about the fancy fills.

overall good job. just keep it up and try to be objective about yourself

Not really my cup of tea as far as music goes but it was really raw. I kinda liked that. Sounded like a garage band and had a kinda 70s era vibe to it in a way (doubt thats what you were going for). For some reason I got this impression of a lighter Silverchair. Hell, even Silverchair's frogstomp album was raw and they hit it off big. Keep up the work and who knows what could happen.

Considering they play worse on MTV, I'd say you guys sound pretty good

btw, Nearest the Crow Flies was really good. It will be interesting to hear how the band matures. Keep us posted

silverchair are an australian band... how often did they play live shows on MTV? (seems strange to fly all that way)

Yes, I knew Silverchair were aussies. When they released frogstomp and freakshow they had videos played on MTV. Plus a whole live special where they played songs from both albums. This was shortly before MTV turned poser and went mostly R&B and Hip-Hop. I think they were starting to make the jump at that time.

If you're a band that hits it big you fly to wherever the biggest gigs are. Since they had moderate success with Frogstomp in the states it made sense to come over here to promote the album and tour. We are the largest media market afterall

It was a longshot to win that contest and have their first album made in the first place. The fact that they won AND their album was so successful was just icing on the cake. Might as well ride that out and capitalize on that here in America. Their 3rd album was a huge letdown though and they've pretty much faded into obscurity.

I heard they released another one a couple years ago but *shrug*, their first two were their best. Anyways, didn't mean to hijack this with useless Silverchair trivia.

ya they have really changed (basically the whole process of Daniel's issues bubbling to the surface, they started off as angst with frogstomp etc

), they are still popular here though. Daniel (lead vocal) has branched out into other projects which are popular too. he's even been introducing himself to public life, i saw him on Rove a few months back.
