yeah, geomags are magnets. they are not just clicky-clicky-stay-together plastic garbage.
they are magnets, joined together by ballbearings, you can't make structures that don't support their own weight, so you must think about how you make things. it's like... engineering or architecture and the like.
the cheapest i've seen the pieces averages to about 2 for $1.
none of this lego stuff. this magnetic stuff is highly educational and good.

i gave my young nephew [5-6] a 150 piece magnetic set & was blown out by how well it went down with him & his elder sister.

roid, as to where, it was in 'toy-world' but im sure they are in most toyshops by now
& cheap too, with the set i got being less than 15$ aust. [it wasnt the only gift he got from me for xmas too, but the one that caught his eye]
