Windows only working in Safe Mode

Post by Unixx »

Okay, yeah this is Unix but I forgot my password and it's taking awhile to get the new one in the email so...

My problem is in the subject line. Windows hangs everytime I try to boot unless I go into safe mode.

This problem came the day after I installed the windows media player 10 and windows spyware buster program. I uninstalled both of these programs in safe mode and then used registry mechanic to clean up the mess.

I ran a virus scan using Norton (with latest update) and nothing came up.

I also went into msconfig and disabled everything in the startup tab and still nothing there.

Any thoughts?

Have you popped in the Windows XP cd at computer boot up and boot off from it? When you do, use the "repair" feature when the screen shows up.

You got it Merlin.

Many thanks. :) :!:

What made you think of that by the way. Because on my list of "What Possibly Fubared", my video drivers were not on it.

I knew it cause it's always the video that causes windows not to boot in normal mode.

Ahh I see. (tucks away tibit of info for future use)

So now that I have no video drivers I tried to reinstall the drivers from the nvidia website and when I do that the problem returns.

So what drivers do I use?

d/l older drivers from http://www.guru3d.com/

Also make sure you are installing the proper drivers for your video card.

I tried reinstalling older drivers but was met with the same problem.

Do you think the video card could be fried?

Could be, but I've never heard oif it dying just like that. It wouldn't work in safe mode if it was fried. While in safe mode, change the resolution to 1024x768 and use a refresh rate of 60hz. Then boot into Windows again.

Well after reinstalling windows everything seems to be in order. I still have no idea what screwed everything up and now I'm having loads of fun reinstalling programs....

Thanks for the help by the way. :)
