Guns make life hell
I've never figured out why people go hunting, but I guess there's some reason for it.
But accidents don't seem to be particularly uncommon these days. Seems every season about five or so people get killed hunting pigs or something here; every time because either someone incorrectly identified a target or had some accident with the gun itself...
Nonetheless I do acknowledge that proper gun handling and responsible behaviour could eliminate hunting accidents; the problem is, despite tragedies such as these people still have a "she'll be right" attitude, and don't bother taking precautions.
I for one hope the person who shot your brother in the knee, Tricord, has learned from that... although it's his fault and I suppose he's an idiot for not being more careful, it was still an accident and he could be nearly as upset as you...
But in summary, I wish your brother the best, and as complete a recovery as possible... although his knee will almost certainly never be the same again and he may not be able to walk on that leg, he at least got off mostly in one piece and can still put his life back together...

Tricord, I'm sorry for you and your familiy.
(his justified venting of anger and frustration shouldn't get the kind of reaction seen in here)
Tri, in a way I've actually been on the other side of your situation. I won't go into details, but number of years ago, my actions nearly led to an unintentional death (i.e. I accidentally nearly killed someone). The person managed to survive despite his injuries, but the events (what I can remember, some parts seem blocked out) still haunt me to this day. I'm sure the guy who tripped and fired the gun is feeling the same.
In my case, the accident led to a change in the way I do certain things. Hopefully, the tragedy will at least lead to some changes in your case, as well.
Re: Guns make life hell
Your post has zero to do with guns and everything to do with being careless around dangerous items or materials. This is the same thing as an industrial accident, a guy flips the wrong switch and the guy in the blender gets vaporized, or you forget to check the O-rings and your toy rocket with seven astronauts on board explodes. Rockets, like guns, aren't a bad thing, they need to be handled with respect and you need to understand the risks with them.Tricord wrote:Let this be a reminder that there can NEVER be a useful purpose for guns in todays socity.
Hunting is inherintely dangerous. It could have been with a bow and arrow, or a he tripped on a knife or the deer plugged his behind with its antlers. The fact that they were all in a line without any kind of safteys on the gun while they were walking shows their carelessness, not the evils of how the gun hurt your brother.
If your brother was hurt from a gang shooting across the street, then I would understand your prejudice against guns.
Needless to say, this is why I will never go hunting.

If this was an isolated incident, I'd agree. But Tricord has been on this forum at least as long as I have (6 and a half years.) There's a historical precedent you're probably unaware of -- he's made a habit of bashing Americans whenever he gets a chance. It's like his release valve -- "oh, I'm upset about something, time to go on the DBB and insult the Americans for being rednecks."Foil wrote:(his justified venting of anger and frustration shouldn't get the kind of reaction seen in here)
If this was the first time, we'd have let it go after the first couple "blame the operator, not the tool" posts -- but with his history, we're going to be harsh.
Sure it's someone's fault, but what Merlin means is that in case of a gun accident, the fault often lies with someone else than the injured. With a table saw, you injure yourself, so blame yourself. However, with a gun you can injure someone else too, which is what happened here.Ferno wrote:Let me get this straight.. you have a gun, loaded, pointed in an unsafe direction, with safety off. it fires and it's not your fault?CDN_Merlin wrote:Thing is with a table saw, it's your own fault, with guns, most of the time it's not your own fault.
It seems Lothar is taking the same bait he is accusing me of. Prejudice.
I have been in outspoken political disagreement with some of the members on this board since "war against terrorism" became the concern of the US goverment. So what?
Now Lothar, shut the ★■◆● up. With you being more religious than the pope, I'd have hoped either sympathy or silence from you, nothing more. You surely are no diplomat. Me probably neither. So we shouldn't talk to each other.
Many thanks to those showing support, it is truly appreciated.
This said, neurologic tests for my brother weren't too hopeful so it has been decided to operate the nerves tomorrow. What they're going to do is take out a nerve from his healthy leg (from the knee to the heel), multiplex it, and use it to repair the severed nerve in his knee. The theory is to sacrifice feeling in his good leg to reestablish the motoric functions in his other. Having no feeling is less important than no motoric control, which is obvious. Otherwise the muscles will atrofy and he will never walk again.
This is in theory, this is what we hope. But nerves are fragile things and just may or may not do what we hope them to. However, my brother's age plays in his advantage, he has a higher chance of reestablishing the neural connection than older people.
Although this operation isn't complicated, it is very minutious and delicate, because of the fragility of the nerves. It will take at least 12 hours. Hope for the best with me or shut up.
For you it's a good thing! I really appreciate your being sensitive about my brother, especially after your colorful "shoot mexican in the leg" stories..AceCombat wrote:is that a good thing or a bad thingTricord wrote:Never thought that DCrazy and Ace would swap in my esteem ranking on this board, though.

HAHAHAHAHAH!!! dont even get me started on that!!! ( even though it did happen )
good to hear that he is doing good, man i pray for the good outcome of his nerve surgery. my father has to get some of the same "nano-scale" surgery on his jaw and the nerve endings in his jaw bone.

Tri,
Your brother being injured does not give you a free pass to take a cheap shot at the U.S and its citizens. If you're looking for sympathy I suggest you be a bit more sympathetic toward others. Your "outspoken political disagreements" about the "war on terrorism" have little to do with your contempt toward America and its citizens. You've been a pompous Euro kid since you joined this board, albeit, you were far more subtle about it.
This "redneck forum" affords you a place to post about gaming, your brothers accident and life in general and you seem to frequent it. If the responses are not what you're looking for, leave. Go find a board full of Euro "yes" men, slap each other on the arses , drive your BMW and dine with tall glasses of 'fine' Euro wine.
Now, go play that baby grand piano and shove it up your conceited Euro poop-shoot, ★■◆●.

Now, that said ... I hope your brother recovers the full use of his leg and that he does so as quick as possible.
Please tell me his name so my children and I can pray for his recovery tonight.

I don't believe I've made any generalizations about Belgians in this thread (though others have, and they seem to have escaped your wrath.) I've made a specific statement about your own behavior, but I haven't made any sort of prejudiced "pompous Euro" remarks or anything like that. There's no prejudice here -- I'm just commenting directly on what you yourself have said.Tricord wrote:It seems Lothar is taking the same bait he is accusing me of. Prejudice.
Irrelevant. That's not why you're being criticized.I have been in outspoken political disagreement with some of the members on this board since "war against terrorism" became the concern of the US goverment. So what?
You're being criticized because you're using your brother's injury as an excuse to bash "redneck Americans" because some people told you not to blame the gun, but to blame the people who don't operate their guns safely.
Then you misunderstand my religion. It wouldn't be the first time. With you being more religious than the pope, I'd have hoped either sympathy or silence from you, nothing more.
Your brother has my sympathy, and so do you. But I see no reason to remain silent in response to your insults. You have my sympathy, but I'm still going to challenge you if you say something that needs challenged.
I hope your brother's surgery goes well. He'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
Be the better man, Barry. Attack Tri specifically rather than resorting to generalizations and stereotypes.Fusion pimp wrote:Tri,

I saw what Merlin was getting at, but I still believe that the person who had the loaded gun should have been smarter by making sure it was unloaded when he was in a group of people. It's like the 'running with scissors' example.Tricord wrote:Sure it's someone's fault, but what Merlin means is that in case of a gun accident, the fault often lies with someone else than the injured. But seriously Tri. Calling us lot 'redneck americans' was pretty below the belt. I believe it was just a rash decision on your part fueled by your anger and hurt for your brother's serious injury. Me, I'm willing to look past it. But be warned. I won't look past it all the time. I'm sure you know that I do have patience and kindness, but it's not infinite. If you do go over the line enough times, I won't hesitate to tear you a new one.

A thread is a process of interaction, and in this case it escalated. I have received comments that were uncalled for, so I gave some that were uncalled for as well. I am upset, damn right I am.
Face it; there is a general mentality on this board that leans very much off center, in all aspects.
You can interprete my words any way you like, Lothar, in fact you too have a history of interpreting one's words the way that suits you best. You could have thought "he's upset, he doesn't really mean what he says" or you could have thought "he's abusing his brother's situation to insult americans". Although the second thought seems a little far-fetched, it's up to you to choose which thought you follow. The only difference is that by choosing the latter, you kindof force me to mean what I said. You keep your cast-iron position in all your calculating coolness, while I am given incentive to further revolt in this issue. Which I won't do. Maths only get you that far in life.
Now, it's not me we're talking about, it's my brother. He's been transferred to the operation block 15 minutes ago, so they'll start the operation any minute now. The whole family hopes for the best.

I think he was angry and lashing out at the most obvious target. I can overlook someone being angry in a situation like that enough to not flame them on it. But I can't be silent when he says something I see as wrong on such a important issue. On an internet forum it is often hard to tell when someone being serious from a flame, I was writing up my posts with a cool and collected head and I have no intention of flaming Tricord. I understand his position and I know he doesn't need people flaming him right now, but also he doesn't need to be flaming period, when you are angry and upset its better to just keep quiet before you say something you will regret.
Tri, I hope the operation goes well and your brother has a swift recovery.

Okay, I know I'm new to the board, but I'm gonna make a suggestion:
Split off an "issue" thread from this one (put it in E&C if that's best), and leave this thread exclusively for concerns about Tri's brother. Or if that doesn't work, leave this thread for the "gun issue", and make the other one for sympathies/prayers/news/etc.
Either way, it should stop this ridiculous bouncing around between sympathies, flames, and every other back-handed post in-between.
