a lot of my clients are still on netware 4.0, they havnt seen a need to change it.

if I'm ever asked to pick between those two, I'm gonna suggest a linux implementation of LDAP. I hate both AD and Netware.

At school and where I did my co-op (foreign Affairs) we use AD. I did 1 semester of Novell and I thought right away it was more secure than AD but MS has always had better marketing.

Novell is a pos i think cause u half to have a windows os (or linux to iirc) then install there software on top of that witch i think is a hassle

AD is so easy to setup. install windows give it the domain name and a valid user that will let ya join and boom all done.

the admin tools for novell is a pos cause to do 1 thang u do like 10 steps and with AD u probley do 3 clicks and your done.

My company used to use Novell, then thank God we switched to Active Directory.

Novell only requires a 200 Meg DOS partition. I just installed Novell 6 with no prior OS installed.

Go change permissions for 20 users to a file share with 700,000 files in it under AD and Novell and when your done... tell me which is easier.

Novell stores all file permissions in it's DS, AD doesn't... Microsoft copied Novell with it's DS design, and they've got years of catching up before it will equal that of Novell.

Yep, MS seems to either 1) buy the competition or 2) ouright copy it.

I think Active Directory is used more, but I prefer NetWare. I have a NetWare 5.1 Web/File/Print server at home.

Netware is far less vulnerable to viruses - as most viruses target MS platforms. It is also a hell of alot more stable in my experience.

On top of it, NetWare uses fewer resources, because it isn't too graphical, thus also allowing slower computers to run it (lower system requirements).

I run NW 5.1 on a PII 400 w/ 192Megs RAM, and know it can run on something a lot slower.

The only negative thing about NetWare is that it requires seperate client software.

And something no-one uses anymore:
And it also works on DOS, without using too much memory. MS Network Client 3.0 (for DOS), uses about half the conventional memory. The NetWare client for DOS, uses only a few kb.
