I have tried almost every way I can think of, but I cannot get any IRC client to connect sucsessfully to an IRC server. I have tried Mirc, Chatzilla, and another one whose names escape me. I have opened all sorts of ports on my nat, thinking that it might be an issue with bs identd or something, and it just wont work. Does anyone have some suggestions as to how I might get irc to work from behind my nat?

Enable Ident Port 113 on Router
For Linksys Router with updated Firmware in
Advanced Tab, enable/disable checkbox
(otherwise set it manually)

Usually ident isn't a big deal, anyway. I've just had issues where it'd take 10-15 seconds (until the ident request times out) to join a server.
I'm assuming that you've tried multiple servers, to eliminate a server- (or service-) specific issue?
What sort of errors (if any) are you being given? (Though most likely, if they were useful errors, then you'd've figured out the problem by now.)

DMZ your machine for a minute and see if it connects.

Ive tried almost all major IRC Networks, the connection just hangs completely until after like 3 minutes the client just gives up. Ports have generally been consistent at 6667, some servers selecte used port 6668 or so, but I figure its normal to have a little variance. The hanging connection occurs wether I have port 113 forwarded or not, as wel las wether or not I have firewalls up or not. Two of the three clients I have tried had built in ident capabilities, and one of them would register ident requests upon connecting to several of the serves, but then the connection would still hang.

What was the time lately that a unpatched PC will last on the net before becoming infected? 20 minutes on average? I've seen a dialup get hit in less then 30 seconds.
Since you are connecting on the default port it should work, make sure that there are no firewalls blocking it. Also check the proxy/firewall settings and verify they are correct.

Alright a less risky question: are you running XP SP2?

On one of your next MIRC connection attempts, disable your software firewall for the duration of the attempt. post results
BTW you do.. have the name, email(even if bogus),nickname, and alternate nick setup already with no spaces in the MIRC Setup...right

Ok, do they match the same settings in your web browser or IE proxy settings?

Neither Firefox nor IE are configured to use a proxy. In fact none of my programs, except Kali, use a proxy at all. NAT generally works pretty seamlessly.

I know this probably won't bring you any closer to a solution, but do web-based IRC connections, such as
this , work at all?
