It's Friday night, so of course we're all at home alone reading our books, what have you got? I just picked up:

Earlier this week I read Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming and The Farther Shore, and Ive got Deep Space 9: Abyss that I'm thinking about reading. Both books take place after their respective series. The Deep Space 9 books are particularly entertaining.

If he's dead I don't think he writes anymore roid. ;)

I don't think I have anything worth reading at the moment. The last one I read though, was "Phantoms" by Dean Koontz

Peter F Hamilton: Pandora's Star
Jasper Fforde: Lost in a good book.

Think the Ender series lost it about 3 books ago. The first one was excellent.

I'm going to start re-reading the first two books in the Wheel of Time series so that I can read the third and fourth, which I received at Christmas. I'm not a really huge fan of Robert Jordan's writing, but I do want to find out how he manages to drag his storyline out through 11 massive books. :P

Recently finished The Two Swords by R.A. Salvatore.

They need to make movies out of his novels, dammit. ;)

Verran, I'm really curious about those books. I've seen them everywhere and I always try to pick up a vibe from them by reading the blurb or a couple of pages, but I'm still pretty clueless. Can you clue me in on the appeal and overall story?

ST DS9: Unity (the last of the "eighth season" novels)

This one has definitely gotten my attention with the return of a certain parasite from early TNG era.

Sure thing BigSlide! The series is mostly about a dark elf named Drizzt Do'Urden. If you don't know D&D/Forgotten Realms, dark elves are an evil race of elves. Drizzt ends up being an affectionate / compassionate character, far from the norm of his evil race. The story is about how he is able to survive (primarily due to his fighting skills), overcome the enmity of his race, and how he finds much-needed companions along the way.

Many recommend reading in this order:

* Realms of Magic (Anthology) - Guenhwyvar (Short story)

* Dragon Magazine #152 - The First Notch (Short Story)

The Dark Elf Trilogy
--------------------
* Homeland (a favorite)
* Exile (a favorite)
* Sojourn (a favorite)

* Realms of Infamy (Anthology) - The Third Level

The Icewind Dale Trilogy
------------------------
* The Crystal Shard (a favorite)
* Streams of Silver (a favorite)
* The Halfling's Gem (a favorite)

Legacy of the Drow
------------------
* The Legacy (a favorite)
* Realms of Valor (Anthology) - Dark Mirror
* Starless Night (a favorite)
* Siege of Darkness (I hated this one)

The Cleric Quintet
------------------
(These books DO NOT have Drizzt in them, but the characters appear in later Drizzt books in cameo appearances)
* Canticle (a favorite)
* In Sylvan Shadows
* Night Masks
* The Fallen Fortress
* The Chaos Curse (a favorite)

The Highwayman
--------------
* The Dowry (Short Story)

Passage to Dawn
---------------
* Paths of Darkness (I hated this one)
* The Silent Blade
* The Spine of the World (I hated this one)
* Servant of the Shard
* Sea of Swords (a favorite)

* Realms of Shadow (Anthology) - That Curious Sword

* Best of the Realms (Anthology) - Empty Joys

The Hunter's Blades Trilogy
---------------------------
* The Thousand Orcs
* The Lone Drow
* The Two Swords (a favorite)

Refiner's Fire, the first novel by Mark Helprin. He wasn't quite in the Winter's Tale zone yet but was pretty good already. Better than his later books, I think.

Ooh, Winter's Tale. Being in a blizzard makes me want to reread that again.

I just got Hackers and Painters, which looks brilliant. Some of the essays in it are also online at the same site.
